Is it wrong that I like this? I'd like to buy and put some old camper shell on the back to hide the bedcage and not paint it.

GRM goes to BAJA! I call dibs on the driver's seat. You guys can be my crew. No beers until the race starts.
If that was on the other side of the country I would buy it. I know where there is a cap for it that I could get for free and taligates aren't had to find.
It kills me to look at that ad. The truck is less than 2 hours from me but I'm poor and already own two cars
I used to be into prerunners. That's an cool truck. I used to live in that area. Now I moved about 45 mins. away.

By that definition this truck qualifies, but I don't think that a prerunner has to be a 2x4. A pre-runner is a quasi street legal truck used by off-road racing teams to scout out a course before the race. "Pre-Running" In the Baja 1000 documentry "dust to glory" there is some great footage of Mario Andretti test driving a supposedly road legal prerunner (possibly Robby Gordons?). He sure didn't look like a guy who had "never driven an Off-Roader" when he took the first turn on pavement on three wheels!
I've always understood a PreRunner to very specifically be a 2WD truck. You could get a PreRunner Tacoma and Ranger from the factory, outward appearance is the same as a 4x4 (increased ride height, tires, etc), but they were always RWD trucks.
My understanding is that 4WD is as much a liability in the sand as it is a benefit (all the extra weight).
From what I remember from my teenage days reading off road rags, a pre-runner could be either... IIRC, Toyota offered the Pre-Runner package on both 2WD and 4WD models. It was as much an appearance and skid-plate upgrade as anything else.
Downey Off-Road used to sell some cool stuff for building pre-runners out of mid-80's to early-90's 2WD Toyotas (bolt-on suspension upgrades vs. the fabbed stuff like on this Ford).
I often dreamed of building a pre-runner out of my '86 Toyota... but here in the Northeast, there's not much use for such a truck other than for looks. The 4x4 trails around are more of the slow, rock-crawling variety. Not that the suspension travel wouldn't be welcome, but at much lower speeds the needs are different.
Cool truck... tho... and for $4900, seems like a good deal.

One of my favorite of favorite work trips was to support a Trophy Truck team. Man, that was amazing.
I asked a lot of questions- live axle, 4x4 etc.
The live axle- basically that's used as independant with equal wheel travel would be very difficult to make- CV joints for a 42" travel is not easy.
4x4 was similar, but it was also about weight and complexity vs. any actual improvement. Front had 48" of travel!
To watch this truck glide over a 3' washboard was just amazing. Wheels bouncing up and down furiously, while the body just kind of floated- all at 100mph. And to see it fly over a 15' jump, land, and NOT bounce.
They won Baja before. Actually, they won the Baja 2000 race. Loved watching Dust to Glory!!!
Best business trip EVER!!!!!!!

Pshaw, you don't need this truck to do that... I do it all the time in my stock Bronco!
