My sister is coming to the end of her lease on her third Infiniti; she started with an EX but I've lost track of whatever the same car was called by the time she got the third one. Because she has always worked from home, her cars have ridiculously low mileage, and the dealer wants her trade-in so bad he can taste it. When she went in for an oil change this morning, they naturally talked her into a test-drive of a QX50.
It was very nice, but she freely admits that the new-car smell is a gateway drug.
I can do online car research as well as the next guy, but are there any comments the Hive wants to make on why she should/should not push the easy button here and slide into the QX50?
TIA
EX35 w/ 3.5L later became the QX50 w/ 3.7L.
Generally, this car is the G35 sedan lifted to be a CUV but not really a high CUV. I think they are a nice package.
We replaced our '08 EX35 with a '16 QX50 about 2 years ago and have had no issues with either car... The QX has slightly more rearseat legroom (6 inches?) but otherwise are they are the same car.
Only comment would be that premium fuel is required, but that's common to both models...

Its a mercedes platform (could be scary, but maybe not) with the first production variable compression engine (scary) backed by a Nissan CVT (run!)

That's the QX30 that is Mercedes dirived.
So easy to confuse given the whole QX-something (with little other logic) naming.
I believe the QX50 went to the 4 cylinder turbo and cvt in 17. It's been problematic after that. I'd pass..
In reply to John Welsh :
I think he's right, looks like in 2019 they switched to the same platform as the Mercedes GLB, with the bizarre variable compression engine and Nissan CVT.

look at "second generation." Made in Mexico.
She's leasing it and barely drives. She should just get what she likes since it'll be under warranty etc
There should be a law that says that a car with a 50 in it's name have either a 5 liter engine or 500 HP. Preferably both.
In reply to Yupididit: You make a very good point, and I've given a lot of thought to why the decision isn't that simple. Yes, it'll be under warranty for the whole lease and probably for a couple of years more with the second owner. However, my grandmother used to quote the old Irish saying, "Marry in haste, repent at leisure." Nobody wants to think that they were, um, taken for a ride, and at the end of the day nobody wants to actually use the warranty.

Id be with you on the majority of troublesome cars like germans and italians. I draw the line at Nissans CVTs though. I know a versa note thats on its 4th trans at less than 40k miles. I know that specific one is an outlier, but I know a whole bunch that have already had a trans replacement under 30k.
Sorry, I forgot they switched to the cvt tranny in 2017... I hereby retract my support for the newer version... I like Yupididit's approach..

I know nothing directly other than I don't think I'd ever spend money on a modern Nissan product due to their well-known CVT issues and also their styling is just terrible, IMO. Mostly the CVT issues (that and the horrid VQ noises).
I'd look at Kia or Hyundai, then Toyota, Honda, etc.
For something that is rarely driven, perhaps an electric or hybrid would work better for their use? Just a thought.
Ultimately, many of us "car people" get asked what car they should buy and rarely do they listen to us. So they'll get what they want, just try to help them go in with eyes wide open.
In reply to Stefan (Forum Supporter) :
I think we tend to put our own opinions and thought processes into other people wants/desires. At the end of the day, buy what you want and like and whatever comes with it wont be too bad.
If I buy a sensible car that I don't really like and something goes wrong then I'm like "blah berkeley this car". But a car that I love that might not of been the best choice and something goes wrong, I still like it. Because idk, love is blind.
But seriously some car purchases are because they like the way it looks and that's ok too.
