if its newish just bring the key and have them scan it in front of you.
I've had this very same issue! Even though I'd walk in with the proof of ownership, they wouldn't hand over the paperwork-just tell me the service history. It pissed my off knowing they wouldn't simply black-out the original owner's info and hand it over. Good luck on this and i'll be watching for sure.
Wow, I've never had an issue asking for a service history from BMW, even for cars I've been thinking about buying. Just talked to a service advisor and gave them the last 7 of the VIN and they happily handed over a printout. Of course it did say something like "Do not provide except to registered owner" across the top, which suggests that maybe my dealership SAs are a bit loose with the rules....
Did you go to the dealership or call them? It's a lot harder to refuse if you're there in person, and it takes about a minute to do.

Just called. They're about 30 minutes away in a direction I rarely go, so I'm hoping to save myself the trip.
