The Ranger guys have it down to a science.  ALH for $400, NV3550 for $250, bellhousing adapter for $200 (or an online cad file if you have access to a CNC), blah blah.... many guys have done it for under $1000.

But you're right - I can't imagine using a 1.9L and turning it up to 11.

Jeep CRD is in play but stoopid expensive and they go fast from junkyards, and they use a mercedes transmission pattern and my only real options there are an unobtainium G56 manual that isn't the greatest.

Ian... don't you have a toasted NV5600 sitting around?  Or was that Volvoclearinghouse?  That might be glorious overkill, but something like an NV4500 or 5600 would be a bit shorter in length.  That might allow me to set an inline 5 or 6 back a few inches without completely re-engineering the cooling system and driveline.

In reply to Curtis :

No, not me.  I have more Triumph and Volvo parts than I know what to do with as well as some MINI bits, but that's about it.

My cursed Cummins was sold off 7 years ago.

I'll admit, there is part of me that wants to investigate stuffing an ALH into my 1800ES, but fitting that into the narrow cavity would require a lot of fiddling and juggling of stuff.  Basically, the turbo is located where the front suspension currently resides and I'm not sure even VCH's mods would give adequate clearance (I have spent time thinking about it). I'd want to maintain the VW gauge cluster, which would require some computer work. Fortunately, I know a guy who could probably be talked into helping me there (for a fee) as he built a Fiero-TDI that would be similar from an electrical POV.
