What I was thinking of was what if the spark plugs were on the other side of the engine? I don't know why I thought of this. And then wondered if these are available. But it might solve some of the packaging issues for some installations... Of course the intake port would still be on the wrong side of the end plate, wouldn't it... Ok, enough bemused ponderings...

Isn't the problem the irons, not the housings? The housings could be flipped as they are. However, if you are talking about an older rotary, the ports in the irons would end up in the combustion chamber.

Couldn't you just mount the engine upside down with a drysump system?

I think a hammer, sawzall and MIG would be easier to work with than an inverted rotary.

There are always tube frames, too.
