December is generally not a good time for Subaru shopping, for obvious reasons.
If that's the motor I'm thinking of, the valve cover has the upper cam bearings made into it so it has to be removed with a puller. And yes $3k is about right when all is said and done, did one at the indie Merc shop and that's about what it came to.
