A $600 Audi? That seems... ill advised.
But that's how great adventures start.
Talk them down to $400ish, and just go buy it. If it turns out to be totally awful, you should be able to get about that in scrap.

$600 car is a $600 car. I mean I haven't seen too many that are great in that price range. Grab some dice and hope you don't roll snake eyes. At least at that price you are above part out value.
If it is a 1996 it will be a C4 car, also known as the 100. It will have the 2.8 that is known for oil leaks. Do the timing belt and do a drain and fill on the trans (don't do a power flush, you will kill it at that mileage) and it should hold together mechanically. Electrically...another story. Audi used to love running the entire goddamn harness through the driver's door hinge in that era for some godforsaken reason. Non-S4/S6 C4 wagons were not available as a manual in the US, so don't feel too bad. I hated the seats, definitely an "on, not in" sort of feeling unlike the Typ 44 cars.
