When we raced on a small lake, there was some complaint of noise. Since a state highway ran right next to the lake, one member who was a police officer took decibel readings. Guess which was louder ?

Loud horns save lives. Loud pipes just piss people off.

Didn't you know it is illegal to have fun......
I have not figured out how to have fun without making noise.
Free ear plugs for life for all the shiny happy people who have complained about me having fun.
"Loud pipes save lives": Most frequently proclaimed by the motorcuclists that choose to wear the least safe gear/ clothing possible while weaving through traffic and frequently cutting off cagers...aka organ donors.

My point was, the highway was noisier than our races. we do have a noise limit but it is quite loud. 95db. So we do have fun.
ive been pulled over once for loud exhaust but wasnt issued a ticket. shorty headers, 2 1/2 inch duals with x pipe and flowmasters. turn downs just in front of the rear axle. i think most states have a loud exhaust law hidden somewere its just not enforced unless they want to check your car.
I got pulled over for loud exhaust on my Cobra about 8 years ago. Stock manifolds, O/R x-pipe and an SLP Loudmouth I catback. The cop actually said that I had the loudest exhaust he had ever heard and he could still hear me over a small rise on the highway. I had just put the catback on 3 days prior. He issued me a fix-it ticket and wrote the Nebraska statute that I apparently violated ("muffler violation"). The statute simply stated that all vehicles under 8k pounds must have a muffler or noise suppressing device. Well I did but the "mufflers" were nothing more than resonators. The nice captain at the police station that I went to see the next day ripped the ticket up after hearing the car start. After that, I drove that thing like a grandma whenever I was anywhere near civilization
I admit that it was too loud for the street but I was a dumb 22 year old kid at that time.
If the jackwagons rolling coal insist on sitting in traffic and smoking out every one in cars then tuning bans will get legs.
Noise ordinances already cover most loud exhaust

that's pretty obvious with all the straight pipe bikes out there

Just wait until you notice their faster bretheren.......hint, they'll usually be on a gsx-r suzuki and be wearing shorts and flip flops, perhaps a tank top if you're lucky. Suzuki, choice of squids everywhere.
It seems almost like the pornography argument: "I know it when I see it." Only in the case of loud exhausts it comes down to a question of is it pleasantly loud or unbridled obnoxiousness? And the ticketing officer is really the only person who can make that sort of call.
As far as "rolling coal". Their exhausts really need to be routed to dump INSIDE the cab of their tiny Johnson compensating trucks. I'm def FOR ticketing those jackholes till they figure out how to act semi civilized.
I actually saw one the other day with a "Soot Life" sticker on the back (parodying salt life for the slow kids out there :-)
while there are times I would love to be able to "roll coal" on somebody who was tailgating me.. I do not see the need to do it on even an irregular basis. I used to drive commercial with a big turbodiesel.. I hated it when she smoked after loading up while sitting at a fixed speed

Legislation written by ignorant politicians, destined to fail.Have you seen how long they last? The cars in my fleet that have the original exhaust are 14 years old/156k miles, 13 years old/77k miles, and 10 years old/162k miles. And none of them are even close to needing replacement.
Meth heads cut the cat out of the Jeep.
Replacement of OEM parts damaged/stolen in the job was over $2k, and some of the parts were NLA.
Soo... time to junk the car?
