Last year 2nd gen Montero? Is 280k too much for these things? I know the "real" Monteros are ridiculous beasts, and this is one of them.

Channel my inner Tommy with this clean 86 2dr 5spd 4x4 Trooper?

sorry just saw this. I bought it for 9k or so 2 years ago but the current auto trader trade in marketplace value is 5700-6k. For someone who will actually appreciate the vehicle I would totally sell it for that. It's disappointing to me how little love they get for how awesome they are.
I think I am the second owner but might be the third. The car was pristine when I got it, has always had synthetic oil changes. Had a timing belt done prior to my buying it and I just replaced the rear 2 (the hard to get to ones) o2 sensors so I can smog it for ca. The other 2 were replaced before I got it at approx 80k miles.

Has anyone actually owned one of these? Is this a terrible idea?

I know a guy with a very sweet looking black custom one. There is a fair amount of parts scavenging that can be done from other Izuzu's I think?
Thinking about the Vehicross... i think that's kindof a big premium to pay for quirky. Seem to get more for your money with Monteros.
Is this too expensive?

I have a friend who has had several MLs. He says they're great vehicles that can actually go off road, but says that if you want a good deal, check for service history.

Montero's are ridiculous value. Especially popular are the "2.5" gen which are the square fender ones because you could get a locker if it had the cold weather package. I wanted a FJ100 but they were waaay more expensive than the comparable Montero. I went 3rd gen for the nicer interior and more modern 3.8l v6 but I shopped the 2.5s also

Yeah, my issue with that one is that it turns out it predates the GM V6, so it's got a rather not well-loved 2.3 4 banger in it that doesn't have a great record of reliability.
I'd rather a Gm V6 blow up because then i can dump a 3.4 or whatever else in it easily, than some unobtanium old Isuzu 4 banger that nobody likes.

Yeesh, the price of Bajas is still ridiculous, considering nobody really wanted them when they were new. Maybe if Subaru hadn't restricted the turbo engines to automatic-only applications...

Maybe if it was a turbo. I don't understand the point of Subarus without turbos.

Yeah, I was thinking you preferred a manual.

Yes, but i swear i've seen more than a few Baja XTs with manuals? Possible i was hallucinating, though.
Apparently the manual was available with the turbo. Could swear I heard/read that turbo Bajas were auto-only. Huh.
Agreed on Baja prices. I really regret failing to act quickly on a 2006 Baja with a relatively reasonable $5900 asking price, manual transmission, and a cap. No rust, no issues aside from a left front vibration around 45mph. Clean Carfax, and modest wear. Baja prices are insane. Everything else I've seen in this range are the "EZ Fix" wrecks that need airbags and body panels.
On the flip side, it is an everythingmobile.
Oh, and the turbos drink only premium. NA is fine with the cheap stuff.
Mileage not really a huge consideration in this case. If i can get high teens on the highway, we'll call it good. My Cherokee was doing 22-24mpg highway, but the real world hit the wallet between my Cherokee and SWMBO's Cherokee that struggles to do 18mpg highway is pretty small with the amount i drive.
Everything in the fleet except for the Cherokees was drinking premium already, so that's not an issue either.
Subie prices in general around here are insane, and the only Subie i'd consider a fly and drive for would be an early 90s Legacy GT Turbo.
Not even a bite on the b2600 swank?.... And here I was thinking you bled Mazda. Seriously though, good luck with the hunt.

I've found one in VA that i'm waiting on pictures on. 1989 B2600i 4x4 5spd, blue. 130k miles. Unfortunately it's a regular cab but i won't rule it out for that.
