Need new front rotors for the Malibu for the track (mostly VIR)and have been running the GM rotors ($60).
Wanted to know if the Stoptech slotted rotors ($90) or Centric High Carbon Alloy Brake Disc ($60) would be a better option.
As is I've been having to change rotors at every other front brake pad change.
With a 3300 pound car you can imagine that's fairly often.
If anyone has any other options for rotors I'm all ears.
I'm using Carbotech XP10 pads up front.
Also, should I go slotted or blank?
Heat buildup is my main concern but don't know how much different rotors would make a difference in that.
Thanks in advance
I have centric in my 924s and they have been fine. No track days but for aggresive street driving they have been fine
If you're worried about heat buildup, work on your venting.
I'd go with slotted over blank, but it's not a critical difference.
I've heard that in addition to making more noise, the slotted rotors also wear the pads faster. Like Keith said, venting will be more effective than the slotted rotors and in the long run will be cheaper. If you spend $40 on venting that will last forever whereas slotted rotors will cost and extra $60 every time they need to be replaced.
I'd get some solid Centric rotors.
Thanks everyone, since NASA TT doesn't add any points for venting (none that I saw at least) and I'm pressing my luck to get 4 track days (at least 1 raining) from the front pads as is I will go with the solids and look around to get some venting ideas.
I've run solid, cheap European blanks w/ stock calipers, Performance Friction PFC-01 pads, Motul 600 fluid and ducting on my 3000#+ e36 M3 for years and they're great.
I don't see slots as a plus.
Slotted rotors look cooler.
But for performance, I actually gained a ton more bite and quite significant amount of stopping power from changing to EBC slotted rotors and Autozone gold pads for my old 97 Civic. It could be because that car is lighter than most street cars.
Carroll Smith says that slotted rotors wipe the incandescent top layer off the pads, leading to better braking. I've never argued with him :)

IIRC … seems I remember reading somewhere, that the pad manufacturers have said that drilled/slotted rotors aren't necessary anymore

On black Friday, I like to stock up for the season, the big autoparts stores (Autozone, Advanced Auto Parts, etc.) have offered up to 60% off in the past with free shipping! In other words, the brake rotors are close to being sold for scrap metal value.
