Kind of an odd question, I know.

Might anyone know what the spline size and pitch might be for the Classic Mini steering shaft/steering wheel?

I have it down as 11/16 OD shaft 36 splines, 9/16" 18 pitch  for my 1985, but the actual measurements seem to be 3/4 OD shaft, 48 splines, 11/16" 27 pitch.

Just wondering if anyone knows which measurement is correct?

Thanks

IIRC, the Mini shaft is the same size as almost all other English cars of the time. I hung out it a speed parts store in Toronto back in the day, and they carried boxes of one hub for British cars, all the same part number. I happen to have a Jaguar stock steering wheel here that I might be able to figure it out from.

I've got a 1985 Mini steering wheel on the shelf, I'll see what I can measure off it.

I have a Jaguar wheel and an MG wheel. Both are 3/4 dia. and lots of splines. I couldn't count the splines.

Thanks gang.

So far I've found at least five different spline sizes and thread pitches for British steering wheels and mounts. Lots of overlap between makes and models. Looking for some specifics on the classic Minis, even with those there seems to be at least two different variations. Trying to narrow it down to the 1985 model made by Austin.

It's funny. Some manufacturers list different bosses for Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 yet other vendors list one for up to 96

59-96 Boss kit

The fixing nut is the same from 59-2000 so I am sure they use the same basic spline, just different spacing, turn signal canceling and in 96 they moved the horn from the column to the wheel center

Moto-Lita shows this:  https://www.moto-lita.co.uk/bosses/b25/?filters=147

On that page it links to this if you need the cancelling pins:  https://www.moto-lita.co.uk/bosses/b45/?filters=147

The first link shows the Mini having a 3/4" shaft with 48 splines

Thanks, the 3/4 shaft and 48 splines is a match for what I have. I've always thought that the Mini kept the same splines/pitch/diameter shaft throughout the run. Wrong again ! ! Just don't tell my wife that I admitted it . . .

The shaft size and number of splines are all the same for all Minis up to '96, that's when they changed it for the air bag.

Again, thanks all. Steering wheel sorted, now it's time to figure out my horn wiring. Someone had tried to move the horn function to a button in the center of the steering wheel, I'm pretty sure that the '85 had it on one of the column stalks (left hand one?) The person who sold me the car said that the horn should be in the center of the wheel as well.

Anyone know for sure?
