Cleaning mechanix style gloves

I just throw them in with the rest of the laundry, and my wife gives them back clean.

This is my main problem with Mechanix gloves. They all smell like tranny fluid...

Throw them in the trash and get some good latex gloves.

I usually shred them before they need to be washed TOO badly, so I just get new ones.

I wear them at work.. but not for working on the cars. I usually get about 3 months or so out of them before I ruin the left glove

I've cleaned them OK by just wearing them while I wash my hands with dawn, lava, etc. (the usual hand cleaning soaps) then taking them off and letting them dry.

I stock up on these when they go on sale for 4.99.

Although I'm a latex glove user (wait, that didn't sound right :( ) I'll stock up on those gloves for when I need a bit more 'protection'.

Yeah, at $20 I would not use the gloves to avoid getting them dirty

At $5, I have many pairs around (in each car, toolbag, various parts of the house) so they are more accessible, and if I waste them I don't get too upset.

I usually toss my Mechanix gloves in with the rest of my dark stuff laundry and they come out clean enough. That said, I'll have to try the idea of washing them in dish soap while wearing when they're really dirty. Of course, I try to avoid getting them really grimey for this reason and switch to a more disposible glove for greasy work.

However, I don't use my Mechanix gloves as much anymore after trying a box of these:

The flock lining works wonders for keeping the hands drier and the extra thickness allows the gloves to be reused multiple times. They're more expensive than cheap latex gloves by far, but the reuse bit actually makes them cheaper... and I don't tear them anywhere near as often.

Throw them in with you ex-girlfriend's white sheets.

This works pretty well, I do it myself.

Man every time I turn around them dang tranny's be steeling my gloves. I dunno where they put'em but they sure do smell foul.

Don't let fluids get on them. Not even water. If you get them wet while you're wearing them, they'll stretch and be useless.

I never bothered to wash them, I'd just only use them for "dry" servicing, and then throw them out after two weeks, which would be when the seams would start to split.

I don't wear 'em anymore.

Anyway, I submerge mine in warm/maybe hot water and throw some dawn soap in there then let them soak, and then squeeze the water out of them repeatedly. It works pretty well, then let them dry by strapping the velcro on the wrist strap around the shower curtain rain, air dries nicely into the tub.

That's a dirty lie. I've burned my hands far too often to not appreciate my gloves. It's not a matter of getting your hands dirty, it's about protecting them so you can do more. If you don't need gloves, you're not doing enough.

Get mine through the hospital - I use the extra heavy surgical nitrile gloves. Box of 100 is $6.00. Surgical towels make good shop towels too.

I snag a box of vinal gloves from work for the 'wet' jobs. I only really use my old M-pact gloves when dealing with tires, and after 10 years of faithfull service, they are starting to come apart.

Jessica washes mine with my dirty work clothes. Mom didn't raise a fool, I help with laundry but no way will I take the risk of putting the greasy stuff in the wash, she does that so there's nobody else to blame if something happens! With that said, nothing bad has ever come from it.

Lately I've been using a cross between latex and mechanix gloves. They're the cut resistant, non-slip gardening gloves with the mesh-ish top. I'll look at the tag again (I forgot where we picked them up), but they're similar to this: http://www.amazon.com/Pack-Atlas-Glove-Garden-Gloves/dp/B001CLDCKQ except mine a more manly yellow and black color scheme. They don't tear like mechanix gloves, give better grip, and absorb less fluid from trannys....

The downside is that they don't cushion impacts.

I also use the Harbor Freight gloves. In the cases where I do get a ton of oil or something on them and don't have a spare set about, I'll clean them. What I do is stick them in an empty 64oz glass jar with hot water, Greased Lightning and a bunch of BBs, put on the top and shake the hell out of them for 15 minutes. The best way to shake the hell out of them is to bungee the above rig to one of your running cars and drive around on some bumpy roads for a while. That shakes them up really well, and gets them clean while you're running errands or something.

FWIW, I contacted the Mechanix folks one time and asked them what they recommend. They said to use the Dawn-in-a-bucket solution.

I've stopped wearing these things for the most part, too. I'll wear them if I got hot parts to handle or similar. Otherwise I found myself taking them off and on all the time. I would also be spreading grease around the shop because I didn't realize how greasy they were when I was touching stuff.

My father tells me that he knew an grizzled old lady that ran her own farm. She would never hire anyone that wore work gloves or that smoked. She said if they wore gloves they would be wasting time taking them on and off all the time. If they smoked, then they would take a break every time they wanted a smoke.

I really like the idea of the flocked-lined nitrile gloves! I use regular ones when doing extra dirty jobs and I hate how they make my hands sweat...
