So I've been eyeballing this hail damaged WRX for something like 6 weeks, waiting for it to come up for auction. Suddenly, it's available, and being auctioned off today.
So, trying to look at this logically:
- How much should I expect Copart fees to be? Something like $250 per $1000 bid?
- The car is hail damaged, and said to "run and drive". The listing mentions "front-end damage", though it looks to me that it's just that the hail beat the tar out of the hood. Am I nuts for thinking I could simply pick the car up and drive it 500 miles back to home?
- Are there other FNG warnings you'd give?
TIA,
- Eric
The front damage is the broken hood scoop as well as a crack/break/missing chunk in the front grill kidney, passenger side and center.
Are you signed up with CoPart? When you sign up you are presented the fees. If you are not signed up you can not bid.
Notice that the mileage is listed as Exempt. You might get a title stating that True Mileage Unknow. It shows 103k and may have 103k but the insurance company selling it does not know if they are true miles so they are saying "Unknown". This only matters if you are going to sell the car.
Lots of info from me in this thread and the other threads linked inside that thread.

I do not have a CoPart Account.
John - Thank you so much.
Fellas - I'm sorry to have posted on something that was discussed here just a week ago... Here I thought I was pretty up to date on the forum.
I did get registered, and tried to place a bid on the WRX, but apparently needed broker involvement to bid/purchase. I ran out of time while trying to figure out if by clicking "use broker" I was committing myself to $225 to the broker no matter what, or if that would only come into play if I won.
I've no idea if it's a normal thing or not, but I clicked on the "EpicVin History report" link. I didn't pay the $9 to see more, but the listing for that car mentioned it having been auctioned previously and having had been listed in classifieds 4 times and having 27 pics (as opposed to just the 10 by Copart). Which gave me a little more pause...
Based on John's writings and recommendations, I'm going to try to look locally, instead of any wing-and-a-prayer listings in places 500 miles from me.

I would only buy stuff I can go look at locally copart wise unless I really knew what I was doing. And you can tell ahead of time if you need a broker by trying to place a pre auction bid etc
In reply to Crash Enburn :
I'm glad what I wrote helped. As for the apology of returning to a recent topic and "not being up to date on the board"; there is no need for this apology here at GRM. If you have a question we will be happy to show you the answer even if that is the same question someone else asked yesterday or last week.
Six weeks ago when you first saw the car on the auction site would have been a better time to search out the details of what the transaction would require. There are deals out there, you just have to sift through the chaff to find the real wheat.
