I like ICE racing but hate working on a car in the cold. I started my racing career dirt track racing and you are right it can be extremely affordable ...
I’ll race a Jaguar or stay at home.
OK, now I've got a mental picture of cutting up an XJ8 or S-type for dirt track use. Apparently oval track Jaguar racing is a thing in the UK...

What I really need is someone to show me how to post pictures here. I keep trying but so far haven’t figured it out.
Posting pictures is now super, super easy with the new direct upload option. All the instructions are here:

Frenchy - Have you talked with these folks -> https://www.vscr.org/car-eligibility ?
Their eligibility rules look pretty lenient.
I think you should pick a club to run with and start building your car to meet their rules. Maybe you'll never get it done and maybe it won't run at the front of the pack. On the other hand I think there's a good chance that with your skill set you'll be able to get something on the track and be able to find someone who runs at your speed to race with. One things for sure. If you never start building anything you're not going to go racing.
If you look at the list of founding members you’ll see my name. Those first races cost $10.00 and I raced using borrowed equipment in my MGTD
But now I can’t race it with them anymore. They’d want me to put a roll cage in it. That and a fuel cell. Something-other groups don’t require They wouldn’t allow me to race with my original wood rim wheel in the Black Jack Basically I had to make the cars conform to current SCCA rules.
I suspected that you knew about them but it didn't occur to me that you might be a founding member.
Personally, I'm uncomfortable wheel to wheel without a cage so I'm not sure I'd race with a group that doesn't require one. It sounds like you have the resources to put one in relatively cheaply.
My comfort level on running without a fuel cell would depend on where the factory tank is located. Miata? If you can wreck one in a way that compromises the stock tank you're probably not in any condition to be concerned about a fire. Something like my Camaro with the tank mounted low and behind the rear axle. I want a fuel cell.
The main point of my post however was to try and gently and in a friendly way encourage you to pick a sanctioning body and get out in the shop and get started on the car. It seems like you've done that! I'm looking forward to your build thread and future race reports!

They’ve been doing that sort of racing in England since the late 1950’s
Jaguar has always been a favorite

Group 1 is prewar and MGT ( TC, TD TF) series. They’ve been racing those cars without rollcage since sports car racing was invented. Some groups even allow cars like my Black Jack to race without rollbars.
I gave myself until May to find a cheaper car and restore this one to use as a cash cow for the race car. While I looked at plenty of candidates ( and some were really rough )
No one was willing to sell one at a price I could make sense with. One guy had owned his project for 14 years. He’d yanked the V12 out and for over 5 years tried to get a small block Chevy in and running. ( there were three Chevies stacked up in the back ) When I explained that black wires were ground and not hot he decided to keep trying.
Tsssk, some people just shouldn’t try things.
Anyway the one I got from San Diego is going racing.

Are you on a phone or a laptop/desktop?
First press the image button:
Then select the "Upload" tab:
Press "Add Image":
It should prompt you to choose the file location (I'm on android so it'll be in my documents).
Find the picture you want to upload in your gallery. Once you select the picture it'll start uploading:
When it's done press the green "Ok"
The image will then show up in your text box on the forum. From there you press post or upload some more photos or type etc etc:
See. Easier than working on a Jaguar v12 and you don't even have to count to 12 on your fingers and toes.
Thank you. I’ll keep trying.
At least now I’m getting a request for a url number. That’s new.
