Ignoring what I will do for a clutch, how would one go about cutting off a bell housing that is too large, and welding on a bell housing that fits the motor?
Need to make sure the input shaft and output shaft are aligned. What would this theoretical jig look like?
How messed up of an idea is this?
Has anyone here tried such lunacy?
This will save me about $1k on the trans cost, and about $1.5k in adapter costs. So there is room in the budget for a competent welder and some jigs.
If you have an empty block, an empty trans case, and an alignment bar, here's a link to a page that, among other things, shows how I made a bellhousing for my RX-7 from scratch... https://grannys.tripod.com/20102.html

Empty block yes, empty trans case no. Really want to avoid taking the trans apart.
That looks like a seriously awesome project, thanks for the reading material :)
Is a simple adapter plate out of the question?
I bolted a tremec 3650 with ford bell housing up to my Oldsmobile.
3/8 thick steel plate. Put the BOP pattern in it and a hole on centerline that matched the input shaft. Placed the transmission on top (everything standing vertical) and found a place where none of the holes overlapped. (Roughly 1.5 degrees clockwise which coincidentally put the shifter dead center on the console). Then I transfer punched the transmission pattern to the plate and cut the inside and outside profile to the only what i needed. Flush mount fasteners to hold plate to the block and thread the plate for the transmission. After that is just getting the spacing for the pilot bearing, and clutch sorted out.
The Bell Housing on the cheaper version of the transmission is way too large to fit the trans tunnel. Cutting off the bell housing and welding on the "correct" one saves me money on the adapter and the trans purchase cost.
Maybe if you weren't so cryptic about the combo people would be able to offer a little more insight?

I wouldn't weld a bellhousing on an assembled transmission. You need to thoroughly clean the case inside and out to avoid drawing contaminants like gear oil in through the back side of the weld.

13brew to 8hp70 with the torque converter removed. Probably raises more questions than it answers.
