I use vinegar all the time. Most of the stuff I put in there is already pitted by the rust so more pitting won't hurt it.

My favorite is a British product called Deox-C. It's basically Evapo-rust in powder form so you can vary the concentration. I use a 20% solution by weight in hot water from the tap. It's several times faster than Evapo-Rust and leaves a smoother finish on badly rusted stuff.
Only downside is that you have to get it shipped from the UK. Thankfully the exchange rate is good and eBay has cheap international shipping.
Keep using Evapo-rust until it's black.
I dump even non-rusty parts into it. It's quite the cleaner, and you just pour it down the drain when it's black and not working anymore.
Hand Tool Rescue is another good one. Plus he is sponsored be Evaporust if you are curious on how to use it.
Before pics of the unassembled part. They're all in a bucket of Evapo-rust now. We'll see what they look like tomorrow.
You guys weren't kidding about flash rust. The rust seemed to show up within minutes of rinsing it off.
That's pretty dark. I usually strain mine through a coffee filter and see how clear it is. If I can see through it when it is in a mason jar I'll use it. If I cant then I toss it.
I’d go again too. TBH I’ve used the stuff until I exhaust the solution, I don’t even bother to look at it. Once you stop getting good results and/or it’s taking too long, it’s time to toss it.
That way at most you will need a quick second dip in some fresh solution, and can keep that second batch fresh as possible for future parts. The stuff is like voodoo magic!
