So i was reading Trackmouse's thread about replacing carpet with bedliner ( https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/bed-liner-as-an-alternative-to-interior-carpet/117500/page1/) when i remembered about something i had always planned on trying for my Honda Insight, and since i will probably start driving one of them again sometime this year, i figured i'd ask the hive:
Is there a way to DIY an actually-fitted vinyl or rubber floor to replace the carpet? If i knew that a roll-on or spray-on something or other like bedliner would flex enough to allow installation/removal, i'd just shave my carpet and spray over it until it was 'rubberized', but i kind of doubt that stuff is flexible enough to do this job? What say you?
Not concerned about weight but i would definitely like to fold it enough to get it in and out of the car multiple times without it cracking/splitting.
I know that Auto custom carpets can make rubber floors. I think I remember the tech telling me that even if it wasn't offerd, if they had the carpet mold, they can do it.
In reply to Dusterbd13:
Just checked their website and they list four colors of vinyl flooring. Very interesting if they can really make vinyl for anything they have molds for by request. I might need to send them an email.
Don't quote me. It's been a few years ago. Hopefully the info is still accurate.
IN this same vein - does replacing carpet with heavy rubber make noise and heat issues much worse in the vehicle? I'd love to replace the carpet in my truck with rubber for functionality, but not at the expense of sanity. It's a loud old diesel, so any loss of sound proofing is an issue.

For the record, i don't particularly care about heat OR noise issues.
Good info about Auto Custom Carpets, thanks!
Any idea of a flexible coating i could just apply over my shaved carpet? I could probably plastidip it if it didnt end up costing tons of money to get that much thickness!

I'd imagine it's all about weight of the materials in question. If the vinyl roughly the same weight, you should be fine.
I put an ACC vinyl floor in my Dodge Ram. Turned out OK, definitely louder than factory carpet but a 12 valve diesel ram is a loud vehicle to begin with. Fit good, looked good, you have to do some trimming so take your time. Always had some wrinkles in it even after a hot summer so not as good as the factory vinyl floors.
That being said I think if I would have done it in the summer (this was November) and taken more time it would have turned out awesome. For the cost it was tough to beat. Held up great for the two years I had the truck after I did that.
Haven't tried it, but it seems like your solution. Looks like you can buy it in gallon form too, and use your own sprayer.

^You know, that might work but it's a little offputting that there's NO guidance on their website of what kind of coverage you get from the different amounts they sell. Hmm. I want to believe that it could work in spite of how horribly 'gimmicky rip off' all their marketing is.

Forget Flex-Seal. Wife bought some to try to seal a leaky bird bath. Might as well sprayed it with water, very thin and runny. And when it dried the bird bath still leaked, it just ran out thru the crack.
Seems to me that old trucks, base models or work trucks, came with rubber floors. I had a base edition K5 Blazer that had fitted rubber floor mats instead of carpet and rubber foam as insulation. Bought it when I lived in Fairbanks, Alaska. The rubber floor was easy to clean after tracking in slush and mud. Wasn't quite as quiet as carpet but a lot quieter than bare floors. Very tolerable. (says a guy that crewed helicopters for a living ) Held in the heater heat pretty well too and wasn't too bad when I moved to KY/TN area in the summer heat. At least about as well as you would expect a vehicle without A/C would be. Floors didn't get hot.

Sounds a lot like why i'm trying to convert. It just so happens that Honda Insights didn't come with them (and further, the lightweight carpet they did come with is the absolute worst ive seen) and i don't want to just drape some sheeting over my floorboard and live with the fact that it doesn't fit right.

But, but, but, they shot that boat with cannons and it still floated...
