Back when I used to work on boats a hundred years ago, we used to make our own plug wires, buying spools of yellow Accel wire in bulk and then adding our own ends and insulators. Can you still buy it that way?

Yup. Call Summit Racing. #'s still the same, 1-800-230-3030.
Jeg's will have it, too.
I don't know about any GRM advertisers though.
I have a question about this. I bought a set of MSD wires for my Mustang that turned out to have some lengths that were way too long, especially the coil, and I decided to buy a set of plug wire crimpers and terminals, etc. And I like having a set that's more like what I need as far as lengths.
But how do you deal with a boot that isn't firmly affixed to the cable? Like I'm used to grabbing the boot at the base where it meets the cable and pulling and the thing comes off and everything is great. Here I have this cable and boot that isn't really very married / molded together and I have to slide the boot up the cable then grab the terminal itself and pull/twist to remove from the plug.
Is there some sort of glue to use to get these parts to stay together after getting the whole thing assembled? Am I missing something?
I recently bought a 6 foot roll of the MSD wire from Summit - they have the boots, crimped ends and crimping tool also. For my 4 cylinder it was $15 for the wire and ~ $40 for everything else.
NAPA will have everything you need- wire, boots, terminals- and if you talk to one of the more experienced counter people they might even know what you are talking about..
more like to find one of those people at NAPA than at Pepboys, Advanced, or any of the others... though the NAPA guys at the store closest to me are VERY biased towards big V8s
