I have a t5 transmission on the rear of a ford 2.3t. Its had a nasty vibration noise on decel and accel from the get go.. I thought it was the trans so I had a new one built. Same noise. I've had 2 drives made with new tubing and ujs. Balanced both times too.

Had car up on stands and the noise is coming from the bellhousing only when in gear. I used a stethoscope on the rear end and it seems to have a slight sound. Would that transfer through the drive, transmission and cause a weird issue with the mesh between clutch plate and trans snout?

How can i post a vid?

Thanks

In reply to Craigorypeck :

Did you replace the pilot bushing?

what chassis is it in?

I did. Brand new. New release bearing too.

Its in a mk1 ford capri.

Clutch is a spec stage 3+. It wasn't new. Got that second hand. Looked good .

Hmm -- that sounds iffy.  Noise in the bellhousing area and thats the only used part.

Yeah... True.

Would that cause a clunk in the rear end??

I wouldn't normally think so.  How does the clutch takeup feel?  Flywheel bolts correct and tight?  Correct flywheel and pilot bearing for the transmission?  Weird issue, but it seems clutch / FW related to me.

Upload your vid to youtube and post the link.

Its been a long time since I played around with a T5 but the bearing retainers used to wear and cause clutch chatter.  Affected GM T5 equipped cars too.

Hope that link works.

All bolts are tight. If I remember rightly the bearing came either with the clutch or an engine rebuild kit.

Car drives well. Just that noise is unbearable.

Did Capris originally have 2 piece driveshafts?

XR4Tis did, and it was almost impossible to get them not to vibrate with a T5 swap and a 1 piece shaft.... however I will echo what was posted above that the front bearing retainers do wear out as well.

You are right. 2 piece shaft!

The t5 is 100% rebuild. New bearings, gearset etc.

I wonder if a two piece prop would help it.. Sounds costly but I'll try anything at this stage...

Get the rear up on stands and remove the driveshaft. Fire it up and run through the gears and see if the noise is still there.

Its hard to tell on video but try different ground speeds with different engine speeds with clutch in and clutch out and report what changes happen.

The video almost sounds like nothing in the noise is changing as you accelerate but it’s hard to tell

Its only there between 2500 to 3500rpm. Clutch disengaged and sound goes away. Even pressing the clutch 50% makes no difference.

Theres a nasty vibration/grind, like its got straight cut gears.

So darn loud in the rpm band.

There's a harmonic frequency being amplified by something maybe.. Dust plate??

Im gonna take the drive off as you say and see. Then next is check clutch springs and cover. Then maybe try installing the correct ends on the old two piece drive see if that'll help.

Maybe the drive gets to some sort of division of critical balance speed and emits a vibration into the transmission.

If it is engine rpm-based and shows up irrelevant of the gear selected, even neutral, and goes away with clutch engaged, sounds like it is engine or clutch.

If you are parked in neutral and clutch pedal out, and you take it to 3,000, the noise is there? And it goes away with pedal in?  Definitely seems like clutch.

Its rpm based mainly noticeable in higher gears around 2500 to 3500. It might be there in lower gears to but the lower gears buzz through that rpm so fast it's maybe not noticeable.

Not there in neutral.

Removed drive shaft. Revved in all gears, no noise. I only get this soynd when loading and unloading the drive train so hard to replicate on stands.

Makes no difference with clutch in or out when stationary.

Transmission now out, clutch looks fine, no dislodged springs or bent fingers on the cover. Dust plate has no contact evidence and the input shaft Definately not bottoming out. Starter motor not touching flywheel either. .

Gonna put in a new clutch kit and pilot bearing to be sure.

The input shaft has a bit of play but that normal If I remember correctly.

I also have the trans fluid in a clean container so I can strain that later for any bad evidence.

Don’t forget the front bearing retainer!  As stated they wear out.

That looks like a bit much to me but I don't know the specs on it, if you pull straight out on it does it have any end play or does it just wiggle side to side?  I know there are some videos out there showing how to pull it, I'm pretty sure it is just the four bolts and some sealant to bust loose from to remove the retainer, the important thing is making sure you install it again the right way.

No end play. Just side to side.
