E-mail notifications

Sorry if you've covered this, but I can't find it without a search feature.

Will we be getting e-mail notifications when new posts are added to threads we are watching?? Or did I just miss something in setting up my profile?

Additionally, can the watch list be configured so that you can go directly to recent posts? It's not a very useful tool if I have to re-read through the entire thread.

From what I remember reading:

There is not currently an email notification for the watched threads, they simply go into the "Watched" area.

You can go to the last new post (since you were last on the board) in the thread by hitting the red double chevron arrow thing at the far right under where it says "Last Post"

There is no double chevron on the watched list. There is also no star.

Are they hoping to have email notification??

I think Mr. Baxter said it is on his "to do" if people wanted it, but it wasn't priority.

Let me see what I can do about about adding some more info on the watchlist.

I dunno about email notifications... maybe... but I just double-checked to make sure improving the watchlist is on my to-do list. It is, but it's a mighty long list. Got some other fixes/improvements you mentioned on there, too.

Anyway, I wouldn't say dead. I'll know more when I get to it on the list. Right now primary focus is fixing things that are broken, improving speed, and adding features as I can. Among the features, they're coming along in a "how much benefit vs. how much time" order.

To make a quick case for the benefit on this one:

I understand part of the point of the site is currently to generate traffic to make advertisers happy...

The notifications keep me coming back. It is easy to have multiple conversations at once, and each time there is a notification I return and pick up where I left off.

Without the notifications, the site functions in such a way as to encourage users to always be browsing. It takes effort to find the threads that I have already found that interest me, and then to get back to the point where I left off. Those stars in the left column don't work right. My usage time has greatly decreased because I am not interested in spending large amounts of time to keep finding where I left off.

I would bet there are others like me.

The RSS feeds are great, that with an "Auto-watch on reply" and e-mail notifications would be perfect.

I haven't found the double chevrons to return me to the last unread thread. It gets me to the last few posts, but never takes me back to where I was the last time I read. I have to scroll up to find the last thread I've read.

Carguy, the double chevrons aren't intended to take you to the last unread thread, or first new post, or however you want to look at it. They are what they say they are... the last post. Clicking on the yellow star denoting new posts SHOULD take you to the first new post. That's the plan, anyway.

Again, I'm not saying there will be no email notifications. I haven't looked at it at all, but I've added it to the list to investigate.

I had been hearing the chevrons took me there. Just for the record, they don't always go to the last post. If there have been a lot of posts they will land me somewhere between the last post and the last post I'd read.
