I'm picking up an '08 V6 with 85 kms sport tomorrow and the dealer tried to sell me extended waranty for nearly 3k.Of course thats retarded but does anyone have experience with the rav beyond the factory warranty to suggest how big a risk it is to go without. Suggest other options besides the dealer warranty?

The warranty will have a lot of exclusions, things that are not covered. It is possible that you will pay $3k and then still have to pay more for actual repairs.
Save the $3k and you will be sure that all of your $3k will go toward repairs.
Expect that the dealership is making a nearly $1k profit on the sale of this warranty and everyone is betting the car will not need $3k (or even $2k) of "approved" repairs. I recommend you join their advice and also bet it will not need this "approved" repair.
Pass on the warranty but rather open a $3k savings account.

We bought our base 06 AWD V6 new in 06. The biggest problem we had was with the intermediate steering shaft making a clunking sound. It was replaced for us out of warranty (but I had the issue documented while we were still in warranty). The dealer also replaced the front struts and strut mounts before the TSB was out on the intermediate steering shaft, but that work wasn't necessary. I also replaced the VVTI oil return line with the metal one from the Lexus version of the V6, there's a TSB on the stock oil hose developing leaks. The radio display shows garbled characters frequently, but it still works, so I ignore it. All in all, it's about to turn 100k, and it's been a solid vehicle for us. Long story short, I'd verify that the TSB fixes have been applied to the car and you'll have far less to worry about.

$3k for an extended warranty seems really expensive, if it were me I would likely pass. We added a HondaCare extended warranty on a CPO Odyssey a few years back for about $1k, for comparison. That gave us four additional years on the warranty, and up to 100k in mileage (whichever comes first).

Yes I've read about the oil line problem, mines an '08 so it should be fine but I'll pull the cover to check the metal line is in place.I've been doing a fair bit of studying in the ravworld forum, repairs to major components seem pretty rare. If the warranty extension was the 1k I was expecting I'd likely just buy it,3k is a whole nother league however.

Tell them you will give them $1,000 for the warranty. Discount Tire once cut the cost of their tire warranty in half when I balked at it.

I've seen a few claims of someone somehow finding an extended warranty other than some of the better CPO programs worth more than the paper it was printed on, but this is exceedingly rare. Usually they have a combination of writing the terms so that most things that actually break aren't covered, restrictions on who services the car, and high deductables that mean you usually end up with a lot of out of pocket expenses anyway. You'd be way better off putting the $3K in a savings account.
