Will it start on ether and run at high RPMs, but die at idle.
Please please please don't use ether on these trucks as the glow plugs will fire it off and make for a MUCH worse day.

When did your MPG drop? Could possibly be the winter blend of fuel?
A failing CPS will indeed cause a loss of fuel economy as the commanded timing of the injection pulses is skewed from where they should be. Timing is pretty critical on a direct injected engine.
ether = dead engine 80% of the time
No, I'd never use ether on a diesel. I rarely even use it on a gas engine.
MPG went into the crapper about 3-4 months ago. Sort-of around the time the weather got cold. Might have been a combo of winter diesel and the failed t-stat.
For the CPS, I figured it either worked or didn't. Anyay, even after I replaced it the fuel economy stayed about the same. We'll see how it looks now with the new t-stat. Or if it improves in the spring.

at 3 gallons per oil change that would get pricey!
Ya, but then you don't have to change the oil for 15,000 miles...
good write up with some lessons learned
