I'm less surprised about Aston as I am about McLaren- Aston struggled for both test sessions, whereas McLaren looked really strong in Barcelona.  Aston doesn't seem that they can wrap their heads around their problems.

Agreed. Most of my shock was McLaren. I feel like AM may have punched above their weight 2 years ago and may not have a great foundation to mix with the top teams. That's not a very informed opinion. Just my thought

Almost seems to me that F1 will regret selling the team to Stroll vs. Andretti.  Ever since he's taken control, they have progressed down the grid.

Hamilton explained some of the tire deg post-race, and it basically all comes down to a side effect of the bouncing. I think they'll get on top of that and Red Bull missed a chance at banking some points that would be very useful later in the season as Mercedes figures out their problem.

If Mercedes were simply resting on their laurels, they would have started struggling a few years back. Last year's aero changes were basically aimed at them specifically which put them on the back foot - but they still won the constructor's and came within one bad race director call of the driver's. That fight back last year sure didn't look like a team that was complacent.

I feel for the McLaren drivers. Danny just can't catch a break.

Yeah that is what I was eluding too on team luck. He had a good car with RB but had to go because you know Red Bull. Then he has had a gang of bad luck in my opinion.

It would be great to see a real 3 way title fight with strong 2nd tier teams always there to capitalize on mistakes, wrecks, and mechanical failures.

But I guess that was the FIA's intention with the new rules.

I 'm thinking that Mercedes is cranking up the Computational Fluid Dynamics computers at this point.

Not a word about Max's steering problem there at the end - must have been part of the problem caused by the fuel pump, eh? Do these cars have electric or hydraulic power steering?  Maybe another indicator of electrical problems?

In reply to Jim Pettengill :

I've seen one dubious claim that the car was damaged when it was dropped to hard off the jacks.  But since they have been doing that procedure for over a decade, I'm not sure how normally dropping the car off the jacks is too hard.

As for the power steering- that's really a good question, since Haas had a hydraulic problem on Saturday that was relate to the PS, but it seems that RB has electric power steering.

It sure seems that the Red Bull engine has a significant electrical problem- which caught on fire for Gasley, locked up the rear tires for Perez, and caused some steering faults for Verstappen.

I have ESPN+ last year I was able to watch the last F1 race and F2 and F3 races. This year I wasn't able to watch any of the F1 content (just F2 & F3), so I did a free trial with FUBU TV. The cost of FubuTV is ridiculous Sling is more reasonable ($25 a month) and because I have AT&T internet I can't get the deals with Spectrum. Is there anything cheaper then the $25 for Sling?

F1TV looks like it's $10/month or $80 for the whole year.  I know they had a lot of teething issues, but I've never used it.  Might be worth the 7 day trial?

I use F1 TV. It's great. You get a lot more than just the races. All practices, extra shows. You can stream from your phone to your TV. They also do extended highlights that are short (like 10 minutes) or long (maybe 30-45) so if you miss a race you can see the good stuff without watching it or just seeing a 2 minute YouTube review.

So I get ESPN through the Disney plus bundle.  Last year I couldn't watch F1 in English, but I discovered for the last couple of races I could get F1 in Spanish, I couldn't manage that yesterday.  I'm not paying for another service, and I'm certainly not paying for F1TV, so it looks like I'll just be watching Indy car this year, not F1.  I don't even mind watching a time delayed race rather than live as I'm normally busy on  weekends.  Any other suggestions other than limiting myself to 5-7 min highlights on YouTube?

In reply to Adrian_Thompson (Forum Supporter) :

I have the same bundle, I tried listening to the stream on youtube for free, but F1 is such a visual sport it really sucks. ESPN+ is  really lame for what it is, I wish it had the same ability as Peacock.

There are ways to stream for free live that aren't too difficult but it can get tiresome. Last year for the Brasil race the streams weren't running well so I signed up for a year of F1Tv and it has been worth it to me. This year it looks like they are using their own commentators for the race with Julian Palmer being one of them rather than using the Sky broadcast (I did use a stream for the Sky pre-race as that is usually fun to watch). You also get all of the cars onboard cameras with radio calls, live timing and I think there is a pit lane channel with a few onboards and commentary. I cast the main feed to the TV and switch between onboard camera's on my laptop throughout the race. Lots of past races are available as well.

v2.sportsurge.net always has a number of streams when there are sessions live as well as other sports.

I got F1TV for Christmas last year and it's has some issues but not too bad.  If I watch it on my laptop, I can change audio feeds from F1 commentators to Sky Sports.  I can also switch to driver views and listen to their onboard.  I didn't get a chance to do it this race, but a buddy of mine says he has the main feed in one window and a couple of driver feeds in other windows during the race, which is pretty cool.  Only issue I've see so far is that on my AppleTV, I can't figure out how to change the audio feed.

I cast to my TV from my computer and then open an incognito tab and login there to watch a second stream with the onboards. If I try to have both windows open in a normal browser they both take over the cast stream and I can only watch one. This is using chrome and a chromecast

It sure seems that the Red Bull engine has a significant electrical problem- which caught on fire for Gasley, locked up the rear tires for Perez, and caused some steering faults for Verstappen.

I watched the race again last night - well, up to the LeClerc/Max scuffle and then starting from lap 42. Max started complaining about the steering being heavy and inconsistent, then the lights on the rear started to flicker on occasionally, then he finally brought it in with the lights on fairly consistently. The transition from "nothing is wrong" to "get it back to the pits if you can" seemed awfully quick taking into consideration the usual time lag for messages. Someone spotted what was happening. I've driven an EPAS car with a low battery and it is patchy - the assist cuts in and out and when it's not assisted, it's really heavy :)

Perez may have had the exact same problem that Gasley did. The difference is that his electrical cut out mid-corner which caused the spin, and he may have had less power in the battery as he'd been defending against Lewis. He didn't roll as far because he was moving slower and his momentum was cut by sliding sideways instead of rolling. Gasley wasn't able to disengage the clutch so he came to a clunking stop when he did slow enough. That may have also been why Gasley caught fire and Perez didn't, Gasley may have been pumping power into a system that was not able to accept it.

What an exciting race! Myself, my lady, and my buddy are all unabashed Hamilton fans, so we were happy to see the misfortune of RBR get Hammy on the podium. Horner just continues to become more and more punchable, the Oxford dictionary should just put a picture of him next to smarmy.

We went to a friends house to watch the race.......he made a big middle eastern smorgasbord for the race. Fresh pita, spicy chickpeas, fried curry potato pancakes, and curried eggs. Delicious. If you like to cook, you guys should check out the www.f1cookbook.com for regional recipes for the different races.

Janel was very happy to see Max retire but was gutted by Checo's problem. She likes him. That was by far the happiest podium I've seen in a long time, everyone was overjoyed to be up there.

Remember how I wondered who RB were going to throw under the bus? Looks like Marco is blaming the required fuel pump the entire field was using.

My son's friend (a RBR Fan) was shamelessly talking smack before the race.

After the race I said  "Dead Bull gives you flames"

While I am a Hamilton fan, I'm also a Ferrari F1 fan of 46 years and so I was very happy with the outcome.

Fingers crossed we get a three way fight this year.

Excited to check out the F1 cookbook! I've been doing regional food to go with MotoGP races the last few years, though I fell back to takeout for yesterday's round from Indonesia (it was awesome).

And yeah, I don't expect everyone to be nice in F1, but RBR have made themselves easy to dislike. Still, I was a little shocked at how much I enjoyed watching Verstappen screaming about his failing car. Oof.
