I noticed that you guys said you had a three speed shifter on your four speed AOD.
I'm 99% sure that's factory. My Mustang had an AOD, and there weren't separate detents for 1 and 2, just a generic "L" below D and OD. Basically, you can start in L, and it'll hold 1st, but if you put it in D, it'll shift between 1, 2, and 3rd. The only way to hold 2nd is to start off in L, get to a speed where it'll shift to 2nd, push it to D, then pull it back into L after the 1->2 shift but before it does the 2->3 shift. So long as you're at a high enough speed that it doesn't think it can use 1st, it'll then hold 2nd gear.
Now, that all being said, I'm sure that's pretty much irrelevant now. It is for me since I scrapped the slushbox for a poper transmission.
