I've got a 1981 datsun maxima - with an L24(e) engine - that we recently brought back to life....it now runs, but is not healthy. Symptoms:
Dies easily when first started, but runs better when warmed up
unsteady idle: shifts back and forth between two different idle speeds
uneven response to throttle: steady pressure on the accellerator causes the engine to increase RPMs, but it does so slowly, in fits and starts and nearly dies a few times in the process.
I'm beginning to think that one (or more) of the injectors may be shot. I'd like to use this engine in a "specials" class car I've been working on for the challenge, but probably won't hit the budget if I have to replace all six fuel injectors at approx. $40.00/injector.
Does anybody know of a good cheap source to purchase GP Sorenson 800-1507n fuel injectors from? Is there a cheaper equivalent that is more readily available? What about injectors from a junkyard? Is there a readily available junkyard vehicle that might have suitable injectors for this engine?
I even thought about going megasquirt, but I'm sure I cannot do that under budget. I know that some people use ford EDIS-6 stuff with datsun motors when they use megasquirt. Does that mean that a set of ford fuel injectors would fit this datsun engine?
Thanks, guys.
The injectors are a bit smaller than the Ford (Bosch) size; getting either EDIS or Ford injectors on a Datsun takes a bit of fabrication. You can have the injectors cleaned, though usually if you have one plugged, you would be running on five cylinders. I'd check the fuel pressure first.

Odd, I would have thought that they were the same....I know that the Bosch noid lights worked in the datsun injector harness when I was checking to make sure signal is getting to the injectors
They both used Bosch parts, but Nissan used a smaller hose mount design and Ford used a larger rail mount type. Check out the fuel delivery forum at hybridz.org for a list of injectors that do fit. I'd post the link myself but can't seem to connect right now.

Does it have TBI (throttle body injection)? If it does, it could be the wax valve (nissans version of a choke). Had a similar problem on my 87 pu. Good luck.

nope it has multiport injection.
to the OP:
check the hoses on the top of the injectors. You may also be able to get yours rebuilt for $25 ea. There is a place around chicago that does injectors at $25 a pop.
Sounds like the coolant temperature sensor and/or the throttle position sensor rather than injectors. Pull the plugs and see if there much difference between cylinders. Otherwise check the fuel pressure regulator as that will cause problems across the board. You could also pull the injectors and build something like this to test their spray patterns:

Last time I had injectors professionally cleaned and tested it $83 for a set of 4.
Since it sounds like it sat for a while I would check the fuel filter and the fuel itself.

Thanks. I may look into the rebuild if I can't find a suitable replacements.

I already put in a new fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, and drained the tank. Then I put in a few gallons of high test along with a container of octane booster and another of injector cleaner. (That's how we brought it back to life.) We burned through that, then started over with more gasoline and a different brand of injector cleaner.....(yeah, I know....waving a dead chicken at the problem.)

Thanks, this is EXACTLY the sort of thing I was looking for. The link to the fuel delivery forum is:
