So my in-laws have this 2000 or 2001 Sunfire GT convertible. Some guy saw it, went apeE36 M3, and wanted to buy it, calling it a rare car. Said they only made 800 like that one, which I really don't buy. But if the poor sap wants to buy it, I say sell it.

Its a convertible with the 2.4 quad four in it, and its white, other than that it's pretty much like every other J body ever built. Anyone know of a link where I can find build numbers, run a VIN through or whathaveyou? He said he wants to restore it.

Brutal forum, but you'll probably find your answer. I have never seen a Sunfire convertible in that body style before.

They are not uncommon.

The window switch has quit, the passenger rear exhaust hangar is broken, the windows leak, the rotors are warped, and the inside stinks.

Its in mint condition!

A rare sunfire is kinda like a limited edition coors light Doesn't matter if its rare, its still nothing special. He wants to RESTORE IT? Sorry... I just got a little judgemental.

They were not rare. We always had a couple on our lot at the dealer. We probably sold 20 of them, so 800 is not a realistic number.

Sell it to him.

Never let the fact that someone is stupid to stop you from making money.

Sell it! Sell it now! He may recover from being stupid and realize what he is buying!

the words "j-body" and "fan" in the same sentence are just comical to me

wiki says that there were 140,000 sunfires built in 2000 and 121,000 in 2001.

Ah yes, but how many of those were white GT convertibles?

But then again, who cares?

My neighbor had a really clean 93' automatic Miata. Some guy's wife wanted it so bad that they followed him home & offered something absurd(like $8k!) for it, so he sold it.

His comment was "If two fools meet in the night, don't be one fool walking away!"

Sell it. GM making only 800 of anything sold to the general public makes it rare. Esp if it has the original top in good condition.

still kinda sad that I turned down a guy asking to give me his jag (amazing condition xjs with the v12) AND take over payments for my forte.
he was looking for something new and I was out of work and barely affording car payments, but couldnt imagine trading in a perfect DD for an automatice v12 nightmare lol
still... thats a lot of car for basically free.
he ended up selling it for 8k

how much 'restoration' could a 2000 anything really need?

It's a J-body. It's a miracle it's already lasted 11 years. Normal "in need of restoration" status is acquired after 3.

It's not by chance a triple white convertible is it? That is the only "rare" J-body I can think of off the top of my head.

My girlfriend has a 99 cavalier convertible. Lord what a piece of E36 M3. Get this, it has a power folding top! I was amazed the first time she put it down. I can't believe it still even works.

one of my cousins has had a couple of later model Cavalier convertibles.. he always says they are rare and worth money for a Cavalier, then he proceeds to beat the crap out of them and wreck them.. one of them got rolled in a ditch and the other one got all dented up when someone kicked it. i think the top got torn up on that one, too.. both cars wound up in the junkyard within a month of him getting them...
