I think I just reused the old screen, but the Vega unit came with a mesh sock IIRC.
As to the surge tank, I'm not sure there is one in the system. The aux pump is just there to take some of the strain off the main pump, I believe. It's been a long time since I was under any E28, let alone mine.
I grabbed a replacement AutoZone sock because the vega pump didn't come with one. Cost $50 OTD (with a little help from my friends).
Also, if there is no surge tank, which I now know there is not, why is there a lift pump to begin with? The inline pump should have no trouble moving fuel from the tank.

That's why the smaller vega unit works.
