The 400M is a neat idea, but if I'm going that big, a 460 actually fits a little easier.

A stock short-deck Windsor (302) needs to have the heater box altered to fit the passenger side valve cover.  A tall deck Windsor (351/400C) more or less needs to have the heater box removed.  A 400M would be a little harder yet.  The 460 has a super short stroke for its displacement and is not as tall or wide as a 400M.  I would also have to pair them with a BBF trans or use an adapter.  As much as I would live an S6-650 transmission in there, I'm not keen on major floorpan surgery.

Wait.....32 inch tires? There's your problem right there, that's 4 inches bigger than stock. Stock they can't with 215-75 r15s.

You are effectively using something like.....2.87 gears now. Yeah.....that would be waaaayyyyy gutless compared to 3.73s

Maybe that was the size for the 2wd 4-banger work truck, but mine came from the factory with 31" tires.  Right on the door sticker it says 265/75-15.  Stepping up to my 265/75-16 (which is something like 31.8") actually corrected my speedometer, so I haven't affected the effective gear ratio really at all.  I have added a bit of rolling resistance and changed my moment of inertia, but not by much.

Odd.....my 91 4x4 xlt supercab came stock with 215s

Makes me wonder if there was an "off road" package or something.  It's also maybe just that yours was an earlier generation.

I know everyone ignored me earlier, but I'll say it again, 400M.  They still litter junk yards, they're cheap because no one wants one, and they're a blue oval.  You want cheap torque right?

Also see, Hot Rod's "Mutt."  Not cheap, but further proof of concept.

It should make torque.  I think that outside one of the modular engines from the ‘90’s it has the longest stroke of any light duty Ford V8.  4”.  More than even the 460.

You've seen the post with the 2.3 turbo B4000 for sale here in Florida, haven't you?

It's intriguing.  Having a ford engine, I wonder what trans is in it.  That B4000 is a real Mazda as opposed to a Fordzda.
