They're cheap because you need enough money left over to buy another two or three engines for it.

They all seem to need apex seals.

What do those things weigh? I wonder how the Camaro/ATS LTG or Mustang Ecoboost 4-cylinder and manual transmission would fit/work in one....

The whole car?  2900-3000lbs.  They drive lighter still.  One of the issues with a swap is that the drivetrain configuration is typical Mazda; the transmission has no mounts and is connected to the differential with a power plan frame.

The engines might not be the most reliable out there, but they're not as bad as people here are making them out to be.  It's not realistic to expect a $2k car to be your daily driver for the next decade without issue.

As for aftermarket parts, IMO there are a decent amount.  There aren't as say a NA/NB Miata, but there's all the stuff you would expect.

Why DO the R3s still cost so much? The only unique thing of note is the foam-filled front crossmember right?

You're thinking of the Shinka, the R3 (as oldrotarydriver stated) has a bunch more desirable extras.

Ooooohhhhh, gotcha. Whoops.
