We were heading west on MO-96 and suddenly the speedo needle began jumping around, ABS light came on, and the Brake light flashed repeatedly. After getting into Carthage, we shut the car off, turned it back on, and now it shifts very firmly and holds 2nd gear and will not upshift, at least not at any speeds up to 45 or so. Haven't gone any faster yet.
Any ideas? 2000 GMC jimmy, 4.3 vortec, 4 wheel drive. Thanks!
Hit something in the road? Something on an abs sensor? Just shooting blind here.
Had a 2002 Ford pickup that had a seizure while towing when the rear axle wheel speed sensor failed. ABS light on, brake light on, speedo went to zero, cruise disengaged and the trans freaked out. That's all I got.
My first thought too was wheel speed sensor.
Googlez say speed sensor located on back of transmission.
See if you can get your wife to take a picture of it.
if its the transmission mounted speed sensor its going to be a pain to change roadside. But that would be my best guess too.
I figured sensor. Possibly vss or related. Trans makes sense.
Wife laughed at the picture comment. That was perfect, we needed some levity. :-)
Closest on the assist list is forum member"gunner" near springfield mo.
Had a silverado act simliar when i had a maf wire break... Just an idea...
Yeah, I checked gunner...he's about 3 hours from my position. Pulled codes at oreilly's looks like vss. Swapped vss in parking lot, so far so good. Updates more tomorrow. Thanks everyone! Grm to the rescue!
I love this place. Good save.
Sorry I didn't see this post until now. I'm in Pittsburg, KS (about 30min from Carthage). I'll have to figure out how to add myself to the assist list since more and more members are doing the Route 66 thing.
