A friend comes to GRM with a question: How to remove these giant chrome trim pieces?
Car: 1993 Cadillac Fleetwood stretched by a company called Federal.
Info from my friend:
The rub strip at the top of the chrome trim is held on with adhesive, but the trim itself is held on with clips. I can see them if I pry the trim away from the door, but not well enough to see how to unhook them.
The center doors and trim are from the coach builder, Federal, but I'm certain they used OEM GM pieces to attach the trim.
Pix and thanx.
Well, it's been almost three hours, and all the guys who actually know what they're talking about are obviously busy, so... aren't there kits you can buy for cheap, with lots of things like small plastic spatulas that slip under trim to dislodge the clips?
Or you could ask the mfr. over at https://www.federalcoach.com/. According to the website, "Federal's commitment to quality is shared by every team member who interfaces with the customer, and those who build each Federal professional vehicle." Here's their chance to show their stuff.
I don't Instagram but I've been checking out Jeff's build. For those that don't know, he's turning the limo into an overlander. He just picked up some 30s for it to go with a 2 inch lift.
Anyway, below is the fsm info for the stock door trim panels. The rear doors have screws in each corner from the inside of the door into the trim panel. Once you pull those you lift on the panel and the top should unclip and pull away.
Don't be surprised if someone added more screws, either at the coach builder or at the funeral home. If the panels don't come off easy, there's probably another screw somewhere.
My hearse, built by S&S, has extra screws in the back doors added behind the stick on trim. I need to pull the trim to fix this, I'm hoping to add rivnuts instead as I really don't want to lose my panels and I hate sheet metal screws.
Thanks for the help on this.
