a generous GRMer gave me this shifter for my challenge volvo s10... not pretty but a little lube and the mechanicals where working perfectly...
but i've got a question... I haven't been able to find the info online... what is the little spring i'm touching in the pic for?... all the pics I can find of this shifter are blury or have the cover/box on it
thanks guys :)

probably part of the reverse lockout, or perhaps raises or lowers a detent to keep you from being able to shift from D to N when using it as a slam-shifter.
Might help?

unfortunately those expanded diagrams only show the drivers side :-/...
I think that angry is not far off... the reverse lock out works but once you get it into Neutral you have the option of putting the shifter into open gate or into ratchet mode, if you push down on the handle it'll drop into ratchet mode... if you keep it level with where it sits in neutral it can just be slid back and forth (like a normal shifter)... so i'm guessing that spring is supposed to make it so it just doesn't "fall" into ratchet mode... think i'll post at some of the 'merican forums where people seem to love the novelty of a ratchet shifter lol...
on a side note... YES i did sit it in my truck and slap it back and forth while making noises ;-)... if the bench stays it'll need to come up about 3-4" for my comfort... but i'm expecting the bucket seats will have me sit a little lower... we shall see.
I dig ratchet shifters.
I had a V-Matic 2 in my Malibu in high school. It worked great. I sold the car to a buddy, he took it all apart and it didn't go back together. He did buy another 'Bu and transferred most of the parts to it.
The 'Bu is sitting in a rental garage we share. There's no console on the shifter. If I get a chance I'll swing by there tomorrow with a camera and get some pics of the passenger side.
Hurst offers parts and rebuild services for shifters including the V matic. I bet if you ask them for an exploded diagram of your shifter they'd help ya out.
good idea... will see what they have to say
thanks guys
well after lots of looking... including the instruction book on spring replacment from hurst (which has the WORST pics of all time) I looked over the viragotech photos again...
with this pic I figured out that the spring just sits on top of the round spring at the bottom of the leaver and like I thought makes it so you have to push the leaver down to get it into ratchet mode instead of it just "falling" into ratchet mode... nice little feature...
next step is to get it to work with the aw71 volvo trans :) lol

I stopped this morning and took a couple pics on my way in. I don't have a USB cable here for the camera so I'll try to describe where that spring goes. I'll post the pics tonight.
The spring on your finger needs the loop to go to the right of the shifter stalk, just above the larger spring wrapped around the pivot pin at the bottom of the shifter stalk.
The arm of the spring on your finger needs to be against that thicker spring at the pivot point.
Looking at your picture, that spring on your finger is upside down. The curve in the arm of the spring on your finger needs to fit on the spring at the pivot.
Did that make any sense?
thats what I thought... thanks rob... was pretty sure I got it figured out yesterday and you just verified it...
pretty neat little shifter and will work great with the electric OD 3spd i've got
Cool. If you need the pics let me know.
