I totally meant to borrow some tools today, get my Crapsman junk replaced, and buy a real tool to get the bitch out. Then I woke up to my cat bleeding all over the floor. We had to take him 45 miles south to the only 24H pet hospital, where damn near a 73 Cadillac later, he's being held overnight for observations. We just got home. Sigh. Poor guy has crystals in his urinary tract. He should be okay, but keep your kitty karma positive. His name is Lrrr:

I can tell a car to berkeley off and die, but my cats are a responsibility i take very seriously.
Poor thing. I have a real soft spot in my heart for cats

I had a cat with that issue many years ago. Caused by the diet he was being fed. He wound up being put on Hills Feline CD prescription food and ended up living another 12 years to almost being 21.
It is amazing the crap they put in pet food. The vet told us to look at the ingredients and buy food with the lowest amount of ash fillers. Who would of thought they were burning up the stuff they couldn't use and then dumping the inert ash back into the mix? WTF!
-Sorry to hear about the kitty.
-The crank pulley needs to come off to remove the lower timing belt cover.
-I think Honda uses red Loctite (or some Honda branded equivalent) on those bolts.
-Last time I did an Accord timing belt, I needed to use the 3/4" drive impact gun ("The Big Hitter").
-I just did a Subaru timing belt. The Haynes shop manual says not to use an impact gun on the crank bolt.

I broke a 24" flex head ratchet (MAC, not Snap-On) without a cheater. It's amazing how much force one can create by pulling up and using one's legs/back to provide the force. I can lift 500-600lb (briefly) by this method so that meant how much torque?
If your hands are at the end of the 2 ft. bar, 1,000-1,200 Ft/lbs of torque.

please tell me your cat was named after this guy:

We buy the hippiest natural cat food available locally. Our oldest cat, Einstein, has had hypertrophic cardiomyopithia for 6 years. I give him 4 pills a day, every day. Our middle cat, Porshae, has acute kidney disease and has been on KD for years. Lrrr is the youngest, and will need to be on CD for the rest of his life.

Of course! You have to say his name like Ndnd does. "LRRR!!!!"

Sorry about the cat!!!
I used a giant breaker bar and a guy in the car on the brakes. We went probably 120 degrees before it broke loose. The clutch was amazed.
You're looking at this the wrong way.
Don't borrow tools.
This is your opportunity to BUY MORE TOOLS!
Sorry to hear about LRR. Hopefully the diet change will be all that is needed and they'll be around for years to come.
Can't complain too much about getting the chance to buy new tools though!
Javelin wrote: I broke every 1/2" to 3/8" adapter, every 3/8" drive 19MM, ... I even broke my 3/8" breaker bar
one problem i see here is that you tried using 3/8" tools for a job that requires 1/2" or bigger, they just aren't up for the challenge.
ive always found the extensive use of cheater bars will get pretty much anything off. I did a timing belt on a honda accord and i had to give a good few bounces on a 4 foot cheater bar on the end of a 2 foot breaker bar, but it worked
Just talked to the hospital, Lrrr is their most favorite patient ever. Damn cat thinks he's in a resort spa! Anyway, really good chance he comes home today.
3/4 drive or BF impact gun...
And something to hold the crankshaft pulley. Like this:
Shame you are on the wrong coast. (Or maybe I am on the wrong coast...)
When you finally get the bolt off, you'll be amazed at the tiny bit of thread corrosion responsible for snapping all your tools. Someone with a 3/4" impact gun can get this off for you. Honda assembles these bolts dry but the plating on the bolt isn't very good. I've gone to a place, borrowed an impact gun, wrenched off the bolt, applied anti-seize, reassembled the car, paid for the mechanic's lunch, drove back home and proceeded as normal. Once you anti-seize the bolt it will come off like butta next time.
Not to steal this thread, but are 4runner crank bolts this difficult to remove? I had been toying with doing mine myself.
Sorry about the cat Jav, I understand fully. BTDT with various four legged children over the years.
To try and make you feel better I'll show myself up with a bit of stupidity I was about to post. Every one kept saying the breaker bar and bumping the starter wont work as it's a reverse direction engine. I actually typed up 'Why not put the transmission in reverse then'. Luckily I slapped myself upside the head before hitting post. Now no one will know my stupidity except you and me. So shhhhh, and promise not to tell the rest of the board OK?

i seriously got lucky with the crank pulley bolt on my Integra a few months back, soaked the bolt with ton of pb blaster overnight, and used the harbor freight electric impact and it came off easily with the assistance of the crank pulley holder. Honestly it shocked me. The timing belt was put on at a local shop back in 2008, so it obviously wasn't loose.

Bah! Who needs fancy tools...
In reply to Adrian_Thompson:
Reverse the polarity on the battery instead.
Seriously, never do this...

Chalk me up as another cat owner who has one with FLUTD. He eventually got the "full chop" so to speak, but that was three years ago and he's healthy as a horse now.
