Saw this in an FB group- the guy was using the tank to keep the air brakes open on the trailer, so that truck's brakes had to stop all of that mess alone.

Darwin smiles upon him!

Like most of us that have illegally towed a car with a chain or strap maybe he was only going 1/2 a mile down the road so he justified it in his mind?  Still an unsafe decision.

In the early 1980's my buddy flat towed a Ford Truck behind his Chevrolet K20 from Broadway Bobs Union Grove, WI mud racing drag strip to Naperville, IL using a bright yellow Snatch 'Em Strap. It was maybe 50-60 miles? All the way down I-294 then I-88 which had toll booths.

Never saw a cop - I was a passenger convinced we'd get busted.

...at least the trailer was empty? (he said tentatively while desperately searching for the silver lining in this particular cloud)

That's not illegal (here) as long as the towed vehicle has valid registration.

I lived there for several years, but this is still surprising, even by the local standards.

That looks 100% legit compared to some in this thread:

In his defense, that's not a little pin by any means.

I'd find the pictures of the contraption a guy made to tow an RX-7 behind another RX-7 across some mountains, made out of an old bicycle's headset and bottom bracket, but I don't feel like it.

But it was scary.

I was interested by the comments about the draw pin.  I don't think they understand that a pin of that size has pulled fifteen feet of deep tillage cultivator around farm fields for quite a few decades now.

Not terribly wise, but probably not terribly unsafe when moving something slowly a short distance.

If he was doing 130 kph on the 401, well...

Just a few caveats in the interests of cutting through the sensationalism. Norfolk county is flat as a pool table, the trailer was empty and he had a clearly displayed SMV sign on the back which indicates a maximum speed of 40 km or 24 mph. Sure it was a bit bold but not nearly the interplanetary disaster the story makes it out to be.

If he'd have been pulling that with a tractor at the same speed with the same amount of brake I doubt they would've questioned it, not that I think this is safe but farmers get a lot of leeway in general.

That looks like something Sloppy Mechanics would do.  Then proceed to run bottom 10’s @ 140 with it

I've seen this activity on the highways of Louisiana. As I recall, the trailers were maybe 40', so sorta shorter. I think the trucks were white late model SRW ¾ or 1 tons.

In reply to adam525i :

We can basically do anything with FIL's farm plates in Michigan without a second glance.  A buttload of hay with no straps?  Ok.  Telephone poles on the trailer hanging 10' off dragging on the road?  That's cool too.  Me going the speed limit with ohio plates and a cargo trailer?  Where's your breakaway? This can't be a 1 ton truck someone changed the door sticker.  You're overweight for a half ton(driving a dually).  Where's your log book?

i know a guy who sells semi trailers and disables the brakes on them then sprays in tow on the back door and tows them without lights or brakes on whatever dry tires came on them.  The pickup truck guy in canada seems safe by comparison

Saw these pictues the other day and reminded me of seeing an interesting tow setup a few months ago. I was driving down I70 in MO as I pulled up on a Ford Ranger (looked to be bought at auction), motorcycle in the bed, a car being pulled (hitch attached to frame as auctions often do), which was also towing, similarly, a car. Now, I assumed this was illegal, but in MO, it apparently isn't. I was impressed, but this is clearly more impressive and ingenuitive.

Down here presumably writing “In-tow” on the back window is good enough to be doing 60mph down the left(of 3) lane of the interstate with a 12’ strap tied to the ball hitch of the towing vehicle & front bumper of the towed one.
