I was just given a 2002 Outback sedan. It has no oil in it and a seized motor. Worst case I can pull it apart and install a new crank. This would have a SOHC 2.5 right?

There are many different flavors of SOHC 2.5. But that is what you'll find in there, Subaru stopped selling the 2.2 long before that and the only DOHC EJ engines after '98 or so were turbo.
That said I'd just find a good running engine and use that. If it was trained to run low on oil then who knows what you'll find when you crack it open. Worst case, the heads are junk and the block halves are junk because the mains have spread open, and very few places know how to properly line-bore a Subaru.
Check the vin plate on the driver's side strut tower. It will list engine type (ie EJ251), transmission etc. I'd look for a running donor with same engine type and just do a straight swap.
F&S Auto Parts in Connecticut Did a lot of business with these people. Not inexpensive, but they have a large supply, and have been picking them apart since the 70's
I have an EJ25 long block with bent valves that I will give to you. It is in the Hudson valley in New York.

Actually, the EJ22 soldiered on until 2001 in the Impreza. A friend of mine actually put one of those in a Forester to ditch the 2.5 issues while keeping OBD2. I think some minor sensor swapping was necessary but he made it sound pretty easy overall.

Willing to pull the heads and ship the short block? If the engine in mine is toast I could reuse my heads. If it will work I'll pay for shipping plus your time.
Was it a running motor that had a timing belt issue?
What is the best way to ship a short block?
Anyone traveling from NY to MI that can haul a small engine?
OK, so I got lucky with a used EJ25...that didn't come out right. Anyway, $500 and it came with rebuilt heads, MLS gaskets, and fresh timing components even the water pump looks new.
Now for the problem.
On a Subaru there is only one small hole to access the torque converter bolts requiring you to rotate the engine allowing removal one at at time. My engine is seized. Can I just pull the engine with the TC attached then disassemble the engine until it turns so I can reach the TC bolts? With luck I can just remove the oil pan and loosen the rod and main caps that I can reach.
I don't think you can loosen the rod bolts with the engine assembled with an EJ.
There are no "main caps", it's the two block halves, you need to pull the heads to get to those bolts. And you need to be able to rotate the engine to get the wristpins out of the pistons so you can get the block apart. And some of the fasteners you need to get to are behind the flexplate.
Looks like you need a BIIIIG breaker bar so you can force the engine.
