Edit: Crap...I spelled Inifiniti wrong in the title. D'oh!
I ran across an ad for a '94 Infiniti Q45 on the local CL.
The extent of my knowledge thus far is: V8, rear Drive. This, I like.
But that's about all I know.
How are they for reliability (engine, trans, etc). Are there major maintenance pitfalls or parts that are no longer available or anything like that? What kind of fuel mileage can I expect? What else should I need to know?
This particular example sounds like it has a rough interior and some other cosmetic issues, as well as needing some exhaust work... but runs and drives ok. Price is $1,000.
I don't really want it...but I kinda do. What you all tell me here is what will help me decide to go look at it or stay at home and wait for a better deal on something I probably want more anyway ;).
Thanks,
Clem

Generally very well thought of. Higher performance than you would expect. Not sure of any problems, but a lot of car for small money.
Look out for the chain guides buddy. The early models (without the grill) make more power but have something finicky about them that escapes me at the moment. I have looked into them in the past.
It mentions "metal timing chain guides" in the ad. But that's just in a section of the ad where he's listing features of the car...so who knows.

Wait...does this thing need premium fuel?

Not interested in that.

I believe most Nissan v8's needed the good stuff. You know it's only like an extra 2 bucks a tank....right?
It's a hangup I have. I own it.
Maybe "/thread" was a bit extreme, though.
The metal chain guides would be the upgraded ones. Horribly packaged and over engineered. dependable and long lasting, an absolute nightmare to work on.

2 bucks a tank, and at a ridiculous amount of fill ups of 2 tanks a week, and we're only at $200 a year. I've spent that much on booze in the past 2 months.

You are one strange dude, given what you WILL put up with mechanically.
But aside from the lack of a third pedal, they're pretty much a "Clem-Approved" kind of car.
Aren't these easily tuned to 300 hp and will spin 7500 rpm stock?
I owned a '94 about 10 years ago. It was an awesome car! I never had any real issues with it, and it was tons of fun to blow the Honda boys into the weeds with a big old man car. It was complicated, but it never broke down so I don't know how difficult it was to work on. I loved it so much I bought a G35 as a replacement.

You all make it sound like booze is a less honorable way to spend $2 than fuel. point lost.
The hard-to-work-on part is what I was worried about. It's also not eligible for historic tags...which is a problem for me.
I might have to take a look to see if I can pick it up even cheaper, drive it a while, and sell it right before it breaks ;).

I own that too...proudly.
I wonder how inolved an E85 conversion would be? I guess the lower fuel economy would probably make it less desirable than +$0.20/gallon for premium fuel.
If it has a knock sensors, then you can put whatever octane you want in it. It'll just back off the timing and lose a couple HP.
Hmmm....
Knock sensors, it has...Anyone?
I think that Nissan was running sensors by that point. I have wanted one for years but haven't found one within my price range/quality ratio. If you get it for a song, I might take it off you for a song plus a 5er once you get bored with it. Great, strong motors though.
Knock sensors listed in the ad. You should research if these motors tolerate your obsession with E36 M3 gas.
seriously buy it for 600 bucks and I will give you 700 in the spring/when I have expendable cash.

I'd probably spend $600 on it. Not sure if it could be bought for that. There's one way to find out

Indeed, I would probably be willing to trade still.
