Next weekend we should get some 50% off sales at the local junkyards. I'm wanting to cheaply turbocharge a 4.5 liter V8 but not crazy. I'm thinking like 7ish lbs of boost. Finding a single turbo large enough has proven difficult so my turbo math says two turbos from a 2.4 liter engine should work. I've checked and the yard I like has 3 of the low boost ones. Any pitfalls I'm missing?
All I know is I beat a turbo PT convertible in my old Plymouth Horizon. Had me wondering if the turbo badge was real. If it was there it was indeed low boost.
I think the turbo housing on a PT Cruiser may be built into the exhaust manifold.
In reply to eastsideTim :
That would suck. Off to look at pictures.
It is built into the manifold. Mopar guys call them turbofolds.
Looks like they aren't intergrated but that the wastegate is in the manifold?
NM ok then so what turbos now?
Chrysler k car or dsm?
Maybe a pair of saab/Volvo turbos.
You shouldn't be robbing those turbos. You should be snagging the whole engine and stabbing it into a K-car.
I'm thinking an eBay Holset HX35. They're like $130 vs $70 for a pair of used turbos. Just looked at the target vehicle and I don't think I can do twins anyway.
Isn’t the rule of thumb take displacement of the engine your robbing from and divide by two?
So a 4.5L would need some kinda diesel/tank engine 9L. Lol.
Ive heard China chargers have come a long way
In reply to Trackmouse :
Yeah that's the rule of thumb on stealing diesel turbos. Which is my problem. Not many diesel turbos in the you pull it yards especially big diesels.
What about sequential twin turbo? Then you could have a smally and a biggy.
I would imagine a couple of 5 cylinder Volvo turbos would be readily available, about the right size, and they seem to last pretty much forever in an S60. There are a few different versions, so pay attention there.

I have no wisdom or words of help but I'm just here to encourage this activity!

Maybe that’s why roadkill rotsun didn’t work too well with a powerstroke diesel turbo on a 4.3 litre v6. Well that and the many other issues the car always has lol.

7.3 stuff pops up in the U-Pulls semi-regularly, and the 12V Cummins guys are pratically giving away their stockers.

Mostly because it was hacked together garbage.
Try some oem mitsu turbos. Td05-14b from first gen manual dsm. The first gen auto came with the smaller 13g, can be bought with pennies. Td04-9b fromthe 3000gt vr4. Volvo are known for using little mitsu turbos. They're easy to rebuild and plentiful. There's also k24/26 used by plenty of German autos.
Big diesel turbos work but just make sure not to get a vgt or vnt turbo. You can usually find hx30 and hy35 for cheap cheap.

I love the RoadKill guys as much as anyone but I know a lot about turbocharging and they...don't. Although i would guess they've come up a LOT after all they've been through. Anyway, that turbo was the least of their problems.
The only cheap and easily repeatable way to get a single turbo sized for a v8 is to get a chinacharger. I concur that they have come a long way. I also have a friend still running a china turbo he bought 10 years ago for $129 with no issues.
In reply to Vigo :
I agree, because some of the China turbos are running the same parts you buy in (none China) rebuild kits.
Now just don't go thinking you can run a China gt38 in your 7.3 for 100k miles hauling and hitting 17 psi lol
Mitsubishi TE04H from the later Chrysler 2.5L SOHC turbo motors (silver valve cover). No one wants them due to their size, but for half a 4.5L, they would work well.
