I am looking at a 2016 Mazda 3 for SWMBO. The only real complaint I've found around here is they are somewhat boring (Mrs Fiesta doesn't care). Aside from that, are any of the earlier cars from this generation having any long term issues?

The question is whether it's more or less boring than other cars of its size, price, utility and durability. I think it does very well in it's segment in most respects, including fun-to-drive.
My friend just picked up a 2016 sedan. She likes it quite a bit. She's not a car person, but doesn't like cars with sloppy handling. Her only complaint is the auto transmission isn't telepathic and that it could use a bit more torque to cope with that, but she did opt for the auto over the manual to get the leather interior and such.
Luckily rust isn't an issue where we are. However we would be opting for the auto as well since it is her car
Bringing this one back. We changed gears a little bit and are going with the 6 instead. I found two that we really like but they are both ultra low emissions vehicles. The reason we are ditching her current 3 series is because its a super ultra low emissions vehicle with insane parts prices. I'm having trouble finding info on what this entails on a mazda. From the little I could find it doesn't sound nearly as in depth. Anyone have any experience?
Ulev? Is it a sky active? Iirc the parts aren't that ridiculous, but its been a while since I swam in the n/a mazda pool.
All of the Mazda 6 are ULEV. I don't find any of the mazda parts prices that bad. I think the 3 series prices are more because it's a 3 series vs it's emissions classifications.
I bought a 2015 hatchback with 6-speed manual and 2.0 sky active engine, base model. Not fast but quick enough. Turned well.
I loved it, but had to sell it because I'm too tall for it. Couldn't adjust seats to make them ok for long trips.
Good little car. I especially like that they run on 87 octane fuel.
