I've never used it but have seen situations where it could certainly be worthwhile:
Situation #1: A guy's brakes failed (right front) which caused him to shoot off to the left, leave the track, reenter the track out of control, cross over it, and go into the wall. He himself didn't do anything wrong, but it was bad on two counts. He wrecked his car (he was fine), but also that he crossed the track completely out of control and would have T-boned anyone who happened to be there. It wouldn't have mattered how careful those other drivers were and any one of them could have also ended up with a wrecked car.
Situation #2: Due to poor planning, the track day organizers lined up the next group of cars ready to go out rather close to the track. You guessed it, someone lost it on-track and spun off, right into the line of cars waiting to go out. To all those owners, they didn't do anything wrong, and in fact weren't even moving, but got wrecked anyway.
Like I said, I've never used the insurance myself, so I continue to roll the dice.
Those are the kind of things that worry me, and the things you should be prepared for. It would hurt my feelings to walk away from my car in a pile, but at least with the insurance I have some hope of replacing it.

Bringing this thread back from the dead to update since I just purchased the policy from Lockton.
I took the time to do a quick spreadsheet with the NADA private party value of my Mustang ($10,500) and all the modifications I've done. I priced all the parts at current replacement cost and saved links to all the websites where I got the prices. I included a reasonable estimate for the custom paint work I've had done, but that was the only place labor was effectively included since I've done all the other work myself. Adding the mod costs to the NADA, I came up with a value of $17,000 on the nose. I was able to enter all the mods on the Lockton website and was very specific with name brands and such. For a single event with 10% deductible was $168 out the door. Seems reasonable.
I guess I hadn't thought about the amount I really have in modifications before. Kind of surprising.
I received all the paperwork by email 5 minutes after purchasing online. The policy reads as very comprehensive, even covering track clean-up and rental car if needed. Hopefully I won't need it, but it looks solid on paper.
Once the event's over (this weekend) I'd be happy to email a copy of the policy to anyone who wants to read it, with sensitive info redacted, of course. Just in case you are looking into it yourself.
Good to know! I would be interested in reading the policy since I recently saw that the track I would most likely run at was promoting Lockton as their track insurance provider. I'll send you an email.
