Ok, Chevy experts, can anyone tell me if the mounts differ? IE: if I get an LT1 to throw in the Miata, can I later, when it becomes affordable (or at least, can be fit in the personal budget), will the mounts be the same?

I'm pretty sure the LT1 uses the same mounts as the earlier small block, while the LS uses a different design. However, the V8 conversion kits we use actually have a small block mount with an adapter plate. I don't know if they'd put the mount in the right location for an LT1 if you used them without the adapter though.

hotlinked for her pleasure

ignore the 944 stuff, these are your basic LT to LS adapter plates, the LT rubber isolators bolt right up to these

you can find em at summit and what not, pretty much anywhere actually since its just a metal plate with some holes innit

Yup, that's pretty much it. There are a couple of ways you can put those on the engine and you can reverse them for a couple more options.

The question is - if you set up the LT motor mounts to locate the engine correctly, is there a setting on those adapter plates that put the LS motor in the same location? I have no idea.

the $40 ebay plates i bought set the rear face of the block the same as stock to eliminate driveshaft and trans mount issues.

mount plates to block, mount gen1 mounts to plates, bolt in. or in my case mount adapters to block, mount adapters to adapters, bolt in.

For Datsun 240/60/80 Z's, the LT1 mounting kits do not work with LS1s. I am 99% sure it's due to the engines having different mounting schemes and not due to size differences in the engines (example pulled out of the air: does the LS1 have to be mounted further forwards because of manifold design or something?). The LT1 uses the same mounting kits as Gen 1 SBCs.

Hope this helps,

Bob

also be cautious of the mounting locations on the LS motors with AC.. at least mine, it was an inch or several back for the passenger's motor mount.. on the 944 install I had to cut n re-weld the tube.

OT but say I wanted to install a LSx in a 1989 Camaro 5.0L RS... What would a guy need to know?

3rd and 4th gens are so similar underneath you could probably use 4th gen headers or manifolds, and they ebay adapter plates.

adapter plates are so easy to make, that it just doesn't make sense to buy them. they are just a piece of steel plate with some holes drilled in them. just bolt the engine mounts to the frame mounts, bolt the plate to the engine, drop the engine in and locate it where you want it, tack weld the engine mounts to the plates, take the engine back out with the motor mounts attached, and either drill mounting holes and bolt them together or just weld the mounts to the plates. it's so easy a caveman could do it, and definitely fits in with the name of this particular website..
