So I just came back from a trip to NYC. The whole time I was there I used this new service called Uber instead of taxi's I really liked it. They happen to be operating in San Diego and just opening service up to North County where I live. The TCP license seems to be 500 for 3 yrs, and you have to have 750,000 of liability insurance but I already personally carry more than that. I am debating the idea of getting a car that I could drive to work and also use to make some money on a few nights or a weekend here and there.

a) have you thought of something like this before? b) what other alternatives are there besides a town car for black car style luxury sedan service, while I respect the crown vic I don't really want to drive one c) Do you think E series MB, 5 series BMW, etc would be acceptable? When I lived in Norway all the cabs were E series MB diesels

W126? I'd pay to be driven about in a 560SEL.

I would pick up a Jag XJR or BMW 7. Make sure you put a GRM sticker on the back

The E series MB has the best mpg, the A6 isnt bad. Once you go to XJR or A8 etc it gets pretty hideous (same as town car I guess lol). But yeah being picked up in a town car doesn't feel special

Sucks that most of these require premium fuel that's even worse than diesel

Did you notice that the only approved color is black?

It wasn't on the list, but I wonder if they would OK an Infinity Q45? And I agree that being picked up in an ordinary Lincoln wouldn't make me feel special, but I would also be concerned about the operating costs of many of the cars on that list.

Yeah I did see that. They have a lower tier service called UberX that will allow a lot more smaller cars. But SUV and Black Car drivers can accept UberX fares if they want at the lower rate

Yep, black with black tinted windows.

As long as it's nice and clean, I wouldn't care if I was getting picked up by a Town Car, GS430, etc.

Our company has quite a few limos (around 100) - we're slowly moving away from town cars - nothing has beat them on operating costs - and they regularly make it to 350-400k before we replace them, but ingress/egress in limos kinda sucks for people with health/mobility issues. The drivers like the signature ones best (10" factory stretch). So far the passenger preference is sprinters set up for about 9 passengers and stretched MKXs. Looking at MV-1s most recently. There have been a few S-classes and suburbans in the mix as well. None had the longevity and operating costs of the town cars - although the MV-1 should have a good shot at it - since it is one more or less.

They never seem to die either, they just get passed along to to cheaper companies. I see them running around Brooklyn that have 10+ years old. I was talking with some tourists one day that were impressed that even people that work in McDonalds take a "Limo" home.

If I am doing this only part time, I want a car I don't mind driving to work as well. And I don't fancy driving a town car. Top of my list right now is a 06-09 E320 CDI

Big fan of Uber. They get my business because they show up, unlike my local taxis. I occasionally end in an Escalade and I hope you don't buy one. Surprisingly not comfortable in the rear seat. Don't buy anything with a console in the rear seat, it causes ingress/egress issues on busy streets. I want to exit curbside in traffic and I usually slide across so my wife can get in after me. Actually skip all the SUV truck types.

Considering that I drive a Focus I am not particularly status conscious of the car that picks me up. Every car on that approved list is perfectly nice. Since I am paying a premium, I just want comfort, safety and ease of use. Remember the ladies will be in heels and skirts, make it simple. I'll drink you drive.

Eqquus. Or even a Genesis Sedan R-spec. Wait 2 years and buy a CPO for 1/2 the price of new. Still have warranty left.

Get a new XJ jag......well, the new styled aluminum intensive one. Otherwise a MB E or S class would be great as would a CPO 760iL(this would actually be fun to commute in too)

Lexus LS460 will probably have the most predictable running costs out of anything on that list.

I love the S class and yeah the Lexus seems to be a bit bland but bullet proof. MPG options for daily driving it would suck.

I take part of that back the LS seems to have some nice options and the 07+ model looks pretty nice. Ventilated/heated seats, looks like rear ones available as well and rear recline?

Bah! The horseless carriage has never lived up to expectations. You want a comfortable way to get around, turn some heads, and make a little money on the side? Get a team of Percherons and a nice carriage.
