A well-maintained '82 Mercedes 240 was in a wreck. Brainstorming what to do with the engine. Lots of torques, but not a lot of hp. Seems like it should go into something lightweight.
Like a Samurai/Sidekick/Tracker. Google isn't helping, mostly I found a lot of threads just like this one!
Anybody got any ideas on this, or other places an OM616 might work?
(And don't say "Miata". I remember that thread.)
A OM616 belongs in an older 2wd mini truck. Mazda, Toyota, Nissan, take your pick. In fact, now I want build one, damn you.
I've been looking at doing something like this for years. My lack of knowledge about diesels hasn't helped move it forward.
You can put a VW diesel in a Sammy, so maybe the Merc is doable.
you put the om616 in a jeep yj size vehicle not something like the Samurai that is for the 1.9 vw tdi
Yeah you'd have a very hard time fitting such a long engine into a Samurai/Sidekick/Tracker. You'd have to both cut the firewall and rear-mount the radiator.
Okay, I gotta ask. "BOF"?
I tried a quick google and got this thread (already!?) and not much else... I get that you're talking Samurai/Sidekick/Tracker, but where does "BOF" come from?
That engine should be about 500lbs wet, add another 100 or more if it's still got the 722 behind it. That's a lot of weight for a sammy

That sounds like a better idea! Off to CL.
That motor makes like 60 hp right?

Similar to the stock engine which is light as a fart...maybe not such a great idea after all.
only old om worth swapping is a 617.951 with mods. 616 is dangerously slow in most vehicles. Maybe a cart lol
Someone has to be first. Keep us posted.

The 950 is good too. Those extra 7cc really make it perform

Might crack the 100ft/lb mark for torque with age and miles on it by now.
The VW 1.9 TDI makes like 105/150

They also actually sell kits to bolt the vw 1.9 in a samurai as well
In reply to MrChaos:
I know, Glenn Wakefield of Rocky Road Outfitters has been selling the kit forever now.
And Xtreme 4X4 did one on their show. (Ian and that very annoying Jesse.)
VW 1.9 Samurai kit

I once saw a Samurai for sale in my area with an RX-7 Turbo II engine and transmission. In hindsight, I should have gone and at least taken it for a test-drive. I'm sure that would have cured me of wanting that.

I'd be so annoyed at having to rev to get power unlike the Diesel. Seems at least for slow rock crawling, that's opposite of what you'd want. I don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to Rotaries though.

That's what gears are for.

I had the double-low transfer case. I can tell you idling over rocks would be FAR better than 3,000-3,500 rpm.
