Well, it seems that right before the last autocross of the season the fuel pump in my 99 Miata base went south. Got a new one from RockAuto and the wire connectors are different. The one that came out of the car is 2 wires w/eyelets that mount on posts on the pump and the new one has spade plug. Did they send the right pump? How do I modify the wire harness - are the spade plug connectors available at a local autoparts store?
Was looking forward to the autocross as I'm currently about even with another guy for 1st in class and wanted a chance to build up more points. Oh well, something like this happened last year also causing me to miss the last autocross of the season last year. Although last year I was nowhere near the top in points. My daughter offered to let me drive the RX8 tomorrow but it isn't exactly C-stock with the MazdaSpeed springs installed. Thanks!
You should be able to pick up the spade connectors at any auto parts store. I'd recommend using good ones and a ratcheting crimp connector. Every mechanic should have a ratcheting crimp connector.
I can't say I remember the details on the various connectors on different pumps over the years.
Used one of those when I was a helicopter mech. Yeah, they are sweet. I was thinking a good solder connection with a good heat-shrink seal since it is inside the tank but I'll look into a ratching crimp connector. Oh boy, an excuse to buy a new tool.
This is the wrong forum to suggest this, but the other option would be to buy the correct pump from the dealer, and have it last another 11 years instead of crapping out in the middle of this weekends autocross, or never generating enough pressure to start the car.
Has the pump at least got some sort of brand name on it?
The one I bought is listed for a 1999 Mazda Miata. Look identical except for the wire connections. Returning the pump and getting a different one was the first thing that crossed my mind. If I could be sure a different pump would have the same connections I would do that. But I understand that different pumps connections was used at the factory. I am looking into finding a different wire harness with the correct plug on it.
I went down to my local auto parts store to see if I could get a connector. They said they didn't have any and couldn't get the one I want. Their computer didn't list the short harness but their computer did show the fuel pump for my car has 2 terminals lugs and not the spade connector for the replacement I have. They ordered one for me to check and if it's right I'll buy it and return the one I got.
