I'm getting ready to change the springs on my Miata. I know that I have to shorten the bump stops, which means that I lose the dust covers for the shocks. This was okay on my old car, as it was used on the track 99% of the time. This car will see more street time.

The problem is that I live on a dirt road and have a gravel driveway. Is there any way to incorporate dust covers with shortened bump stops?

Don't shorten the stock bumpstops, get better ones :) We've got some nice ones now, they work nicely.

Energy Suspension makes some very affordable boots. They won't work with 2.5" coilovers, but they'll fit inside a Miata spring.

Even if you can't fit them, don't worry, I don't have dust covers on my AE92 and it travels in terrible conditions, and I've never had any problems. In fact my Samurai doesn't have shock boots and they've been completely submerged in muck and encompassed in swirling maelstroms of dust many times (although they do have a telescoping shell).

I don't doubt that they're better, but $100 per set?!

True. Maybe we should price them the same as the stock ones. That'll be $120 a set please.

The poly ones give more suspension travel and a smoother transition on to the stops. Better ride and more consistent handling at the limit.

Its honestly worth it. I have ones that look identical and the ride quality and handling benefits are very much worth it. I've only bottomed out the rear hard enough to feel once since I installed them a couple of years ago. They help on bumpy corners too because the transition onto the bumpstops is made much more gradual so you don't have some funky handling as a result of bottoming out.

Point taken.

Of course, my car came with four stock ones...

I run the 36mm Fat Cat motorsports ones $84 a set. http://fatcatmotorsports.com/FCM_Koni_products_NA.htm#bump

I don't run dust boots, but I rarely drive on dirt roads so I can't help you much with that question.
