'twas discussed over in my thread on the Crown but this weekend is painting time for the daughter's Smart car. Its my old DD and when I asked what she wanted in a car her only answer was 'green' and she didn't mean earth friendly.

So I started running the gun tonite, just some of the small bits to get a feel for how this paint will spray. Looooove the color, I may need to use it on something else (I should have at least 1/2 a gallon left over after painting the Smart)

I love the color, but its definitely only suited for certain cars. On a Smart its perfect (Im a firm believer that Smart cars should only come in colors that Skittles come in) If it doesnt sell right away I may respray my dad's 69 beetle with it too. But I wouldnt spray it on my BMW...just wouldn't look right.

The pics are flattering, there are flaws, I always promise a minimum of 3 flaws. But its a 16 year old's first car and DD so it doesn't need to be perfect. If you're willing to do prep work and assist I'm always willing to help spray (but I'll put the gun in your hand and make you do it because spraying is the easy part)

Funny you say that, when we were trying to track down just the right green she was in love with the green on my Kawasaki Versys which is Kawi green in a metallic/pearl

That stuff is $600 a quart so that wasn't going to happen, I poked around online looking for cheap and ended up with Vibrant Lime Green from http://www.paintforcars.com

It was like $75 for a gallon with hardener and reducer so it met the price point. I had seen samples and the color is a bit variable based on what is under it but using the original silver as a base I figured it should come out good, and it did, its just what we were looking for.

Watch out making offers like that. I'm less than an hour from Mullica Hill.

Find time in my schedule that coincides with your schedule and I never mind helping if I can. I've got to get going on the Crown for BABE as soon as this rolls out but after BABE I could probably find some spare time :) Be forewarned, my shop is usually in complete disarray so your side of the bargain includes getting it cleaned up enough that we can get your car in and spray it :)

I seem to recall hearing that the pearl flakes you can buy at your local crafts store are close to what is used for automotive paints. Might be worth trying out on a very small batch to see if it's closer to what she wants.

Its ok, she ended up loving this color (I sprayed a test sheet for her over christmas) And because its a solid its much more forgiving to shoot. The last car I painted with real paint not rustoleum and a roller was the Yugo from Hell and that was um...9ish years ago so I wanted something simple to get back into it. Next up....Wartburg!

actually.. the paint on my saab is in great shape.. (aside from the rotted doors and hatch.. and the donor I am trying to grab has good doors and a hatch, but a rotted body.. so I am good there. What I am thinking of doing is painting the SPG kit I have black to match... might make the tupperware less bulky looking.

The BMW is a different story.. that is going to need a complete respray.

Personally, I have tried three times to paint a car.. and failed miserably all three times. I have no urge to pick up another spray gun because of that

I do agree that Smarts need to be painted in "smart" colours like that.

Painting the kit off the car should be a breeze, just let me know when you want to do it.

I'm happy to run the gun on the BMW too, I dont mind spraying, its the prep work that sucks.

Are you painting the exposed structure of the Smart green too?

No the Tridion cell is staying silver. I'll add some matching green pinstriping on the cell and silver striping on the panels.

chandlerGTi wrote: I can't wait to see it back together!

Me too! Hopefully I'll be done painting today or tomorrow and I can start reassembly later this week. I want the paint to have a few days cure time so there's no softness while I'm working the panels back in place.

That would look great on a locost, too.

Would look good on anything small that doesnt take itself too seriously I think.

The obvious answer is "nitro yellow green." That was the only good thing about my ACR.

It is pretty close to NYG, just a little less yellow to it.

There's a saying... "If you're going to have a silly car, it might as well be in a silly colour."

Awesome :D

I still gotta make it up there to at least try that smart. I get tempted every so often for a hyper commuter car

Should be back together in a few weeks. Won't be going to my daughter (She lives in Md with her mom) until April or May so there's time :)

Of of the guys over on the Smart car forums suggested with that color it needs some AAR Cuda stripes.

Anyone good with photoshop that could figure out how to lay that out on the Smart body and make it look good? I'd be tempted to cut it in vinyl and give it a try.

The biggest problem will be the silver Tridion breaking up the line
