2000 Mustang, Driver's side window:

When I got the car the driver's side window would fall if it weren't for the wood support someone built to keep it half-way in the raised position. I got a new regulator and motor from rock auto and now the window moves up and down when commanded.

Down isn't much of a problem, but on the way up the window takes a nose-dive (leading edge catches and falls) and binds. I found this little do-dad hanging on by a thread so I tried to stick it back in about 5-different times only to have the window repeat the issue and break it off every time I try.

What in the world am I doing wrong!?! I usually start by placing the white plastic nose in the track and "rocking" it into position on the window. Once I left a little gap between the nose and track, once I didnt, I lubed the track with a lot of grease, once I just tried super-glue, once I swore like crazy... No matter what, this darn little do dad breaks itself free of the window.

Anyone here with experience that could lend me a hand? I'd like my next install to be my last.

Thanks!

Pick-Your-Part lots are your friend in these cases…zero risk way to gain a hands on understanding of how the assembly should be configured and if you find that you need anything, it’s right there on the cheap.

In fact, if the parts are small enough to stuff at the bottom of a tool box, they're freeeeee!!!

I'm seriously considering it tomorrow (there's a P&P within driving distance I hit on my lunch breaks).

I checked the passenger side on my car and there looks to be about a 1/8th inch gap between the track and the white-tip. But when I did the same on the driver's side "cruch/pop". and so it goes.

This last time I tried a 2-part epoxy (That'll teach it!), but it bested that stuff too!

That bracket comes industrially bonded to the glass when its new. Aside from getting a new window, get the strongest adhesive you can and glue it back on. Make damn sure its in the correct place though, otherwise it won't seat and seal across the top propperly.

And use plenty of lube in the front track that the white part of that tab snaps into, too much resistance and it has the leverage to berk a lot of stuff up if it binds up and can't pop loose like that anymore.

And to add, not to be too much of a downer or nay sayer, once a pretty bonded part like that comes loose we just use a new part. Just to make things easier and more convenient for our customers.

I noticed you said "snaps" when you referred to that white part. I saw the white part had "ears", but the track is smooth (nothing for it to "snap" into). Am I missing something, or not just pushing hard enough or...?

I've got another glob of that 2-part epoxy (currently the strongest stuff in the medicine cabinet) curing right now, I'll let you know how it goes after the next op check.

Thanks!

I didn't mean like a solid unmistakable snap or anything just that it keeps it in the track without easily coming out. I can't tell off the top of my head if that's damaged since its been more than a few months since I've replaced one (knock in wood! Knock on wood dammit!)

I hope I'm not being confusing, sometimes I try to help and get too into details and I'm hard to follow.

nah, no worries. I just thought I was missing something (it wouldn't be the first time)

soooooo, it turns out that the down side of using SUPER epoxy is it's SUPER stuck to the window. and the window is up to its usual antics.

With the window up I can rock the forward end down and up. Could it be possible I got a bad regulator from rock auto? I can't see anything obvious in the mechanism that would allow such play.

I'm going to take the passenger side back apart for comparisons tomorrow. If nothing comes of that then I'll take a tape measure and a mirror to the junk yard and compare setups.

Narg.

Thanks again! -Bill

Holy crap! I think I found it! It's been right in front of me the whole time!!!

see that cross bar for the regulator slide arm? It's not there on the drivers side! It was probably removed by the PO when he made his wood support. I never knew it was missing until I was shoulder surfing a co-worker today who was looking for a regulator for his land rover. I was kind of shocked at how similar the regulators were, and then I saw that bar where my slider was. Back to youtube to verify and

BAM!

Ladies and gentlemen, I do believe I'm back in business! Thanks so much for the help (but... uh... you wouldn't mind crossing your fingers anyways until I get a chance to try this out, would you?)

Ah! That will definitely do it, I would have never thought that part would be missing. That should remedy your issues.

Man, I do owe you a beer. Professional insight is priceless. Especially when I'm trying to trade the car for a pickup. Saying "well, the driver's side window does work... kind of..." was getting to be a KILLER!
