Hey Gang,

I'm just really happy about my project today and wanted to share. I'll get pics later.

My '72 Capri project is coming along. But finding decent struts and shocks for these things is really hard. So I did something kind of neat. I got a set of Mookeeh camber plates on e-bay. They're really cheap, but they're available without mounting holes drilled, so I can drill them to fit the Capri.

The spherical bearing in them is absolute junk and I read a lot of things from people saying they bound when they installed them. I didn't want to mess with that, so I found a decent pair of bearings. They're metric, but there was no size availabe to match whatever Mookeeh used. No problem- I got a regular COM-M14 bearing. I turned the Mookeeh bearing mount on the lathe and opened it up 1mm. Cool thing is it didn't mess up the threads on the retainer. Sweet.

The ID on the bearing is 14mm, but the struts I'm using- SW20 MR2 Tokico Illuminas- have a 15mm shaft. So I mounted the struts in the lathe and turned 1mm off of the shaft. Worked perfectly! So I'm almost set. I need to turn a spacer to get the strut to mount right in the Capri strut housing, and I need to drill the mounting holes in the camber plates, but all the hard stuff is done! And it's all looking like it will work pretty well!

Take care,

Ed

Pictures or it didn't happen.

What kind of lathe are you using. Just out of curiosity.

Man, I gotta tell you, Denver is the best place ever to live for a car guy for one reason. We have a place here called "Club Workshop". You can google their web site. I pay a monthly fee and get access to all their stuff. They have a great place to work on cars with a lift and everything. But they have a metal shop with a lathe. You have to take the class or get "checked out" by an employee. I'd never worked one before so I took the class. It's a super handy thing to have!

I don't know what kind it is. It's older, but it's a big professional set up. Works great and they have all kinds of, uh, I don't think you call them bits, but you know what I mean. And they keep everything sharp and in good shape.

I need to take the classes, but they have CNC machines and stuff. It is a 5 part class. I'm going to take the welding class too. They have a full wood shop too with a, get this, CNC wood router. They have an Epilog lazer engraver that's really cool too. So far I've just made glasses for the family with our initials on them. But you can do a lot with that thing too.

Yeah, I'm a pretty big fan. Projects like this strut thing are a great example. No way I could do this before, but now, it's just a simple little project!

Take care,

Ed

Nice. I wouldn't mind having something like that around here. Next time you are at the shop shoot some pictures so the rest of us can drool over them.

how does the camber plate mount to the car? I see no hardware.

I just looked up the club workshop place, great idea!

In reply to 2002maniac:

Magnets!

He mentioned ordering them not drilled. I assume he is going to drill them for his car and mount his own hardware.

Yup, just haven't drilled it yet. I need to pull the factory mount off and use it to make a jig first.

You'll need to log in to post.
