My son and I are trying to get our cheap ex-rally car ready for our first Rallycross event on 3/31. We have a leak we need to fix, but I am struggling to find an engine diagram in order to figure out what is leaking. Keep in mind that neither of us have any clue what we're doing!

The leak is towards the front left bottom corner of the motor. Can anyone figure out what's leaking based on this picture?

That looks like the transmission.

The only thing that jumps out to me is the transmission fill plug, the big bolt at the left labeled “oil” in the pic. You can see gear lube seeping out. I’d guess it’s loose or the crush washer is missing. The gear lube is filled to the bottom of that hole, but the level rises above the hole when you drive and it heats up. I’m guessing it is leaking when you drive, but stops when you park it and it cools down.

Do you know what the transmission takes? I’d guess gear lube like other Mitsubishi’s, but some take motor oil or ATF. Is the puddle on the ground gear lube or oil?

Should be able to tell by the smell right? Motor oil from gear lube I mean.

We're novice enough that I don't think I could tell the difference between motor oil and gear lube. :(

Gear lube has a strong skunks/onions odor. Engine oil would probably not be as darkly obvious on the concrete, and has a less strong odor like tailpipe. Hope this helps. I think your leak may be from the gasket beneath (above) the steel cover bolted to the transaxle in your photo. Do not remove it before looking at the book. I do not know what is behind that cover. Mitsubishi specific knowledge needed. I doubt that is engine oil, because that is the transaxle in your photo. Engine is further to car's right.

There's no gear lube up there on that car. That's just really old dark ATF. The obvious thing would be that tiny 6 bolt pan that looks like it would be easy to reseal with RTV. But, that suspicious shiny spot in the middle of the oil filth above the pan makes me wonder if there isnt a tiny crack from some sort of impact damage.
