Hey everyone,
I found a truck that I fell in love with in California, and have decided to ship it to me in NJ. I'm thrilled with it, but I've never shipped a car before. Is it customary to tip a shipper?
Hey everyone,

Interesting question. Over the years I've had 6 or so cars shipped in but I have never tipped the driver. In most cases, the drivers were the owner/operator so maybe that is why I have never thought to.
However, for tow truck drivers, I always tip. In this case they are usually employees getting paid hourly. I usually make it a point to say something like, "lunch is on me today." These tips are a ten or a twenty. I'm not trying to change the course of their income but rather just trying to shine a little happiness on their day and in exchange, I hope they don't drop my car hard off the lift, etc.
So, if you think your driver that brings your car is "just a squirrel trying to get a nut" and he seems like his day could use some "sunshine", I'm sure he'd appreciate the tip.
What I have done for my car shipping drivers is, go out of the way to make their job easy! Choose a drop off spot that is easy for them to get in and get out with a rig. Be flexible with the pick-up/drop-off times. Be kind, be helpful but don't do things that delay them. Typically they are paid to move so let them move on. Or, some appreciate the break and the conversation after having driven solo for so long. Either way. Just feel them out and conform to their style.
