Nissan is finally going to give us a look at the next-generation Z-car.
Called the Nissan Z Proto, the car is said to combine "50 years of passion and heritage with modern technology."
Nissan will debut the Z Proto on September 15 at 7:30 p.m. Central (8:30 p.m. Eastern).

If its basically a BRZ with 250hp/300ft/lb it will be a hit.
If its an overwrought, ugly, rebadged BMW, it might struggle.
Sadly The only way they sell loads of them is if it's a all electric SUV.
I'm excited to see what it is and hope is is similar weight/size/power/price to the existing 370Z but updated.
And it still won't look as good as the Z32.

Hard to go wrong with something that's BRZ-sized.
Little bit of tweaking and it looks closer to the old Z cars than the 350/370.
Interesting, how they put the worst of the Z cars together in the right side of the pic.
1970 240Z with box flares?

This should be interesting.
I agree with the 250 hp FRS niche. But it would be a tall order to fill without slipping into the Mustang and Hyundai Genesis territory.
Wonder if there is more wiggle room by going after Miata market space?
I can't see it going into the Supra market either, so looking forward to what is put forth.

I can dig that silhouette. The inside and that promise of modern tech are what's likely to turn me off it, though, particularly if they go the route of the C8 interior. I like that the headlights don't look like they're half the fender length but I'd appreciate more of a flat-fronted round headlight look or the old square lights.
In reply to David S. Wallens :
It's debatable that they can afford to really do a Z car at all, much less correctly—from what I can tell, the GTR is probably in its last days.
Would love to be wrong.

Is it just me or is the door glass going to be nothing but a sliver? Something I do not like on the Camaros.
Nissan also leaked some renderings of some trim packages and the beloved Cross-Cab

I'm really glad they're pushing ahead with a new Z.
I think the hopes of it being a BRZ competitor will come to naught. Its platform mate is in the high 3000lbs range. I think we can hope it's an update of the current car's philosophy. I suspect it'll be a Supra competitor, as it has been in some historical periods. Weight of the 370Z and current Supra are pretty favorable compared to their 90s counterparts. The 917 Cayman/Boxster is not that far off a Supra 2.0L or 370Z...
Hopefully they'll offer a manual, but I'm not holding my breath.
In reply to DirtyBird222 :
Basically this, with an array of different CVT's to choose from!
In all seriousness, I hope Nissan gets the new Z right. They need a win right now, especially with our crowd. I know the enthusiast market doesn't sell, but having a cool halo car in the showroom and on the streets/track certainly does not hurt.

the ass end is all I needed to see that they screwed up once again. 250hp, turbo STRAIGHT six, sub 2800lbs. A *lightweight* is what will make it a performer and stand out from the crowd. The sugar scoops in front are all wrong. Another botched surgery Dr. Nismo.
99% its going to be the VR30DETT from the Q50/Q60
BTW, is Nissan making fun of the way Germans talk? Z Proto indeed...

With Porsche making NA straight 6's with 500hp, can we shoot just a LIIIITTTTLLLEEE higher than 250 hp for Nissan's goal??

Crossing fingers for this. As much as anything, just because I want there to be a critical mass of the segment so it gets people... moving in that direction. It's a concept so right that I'd had to see it fade because everyone's just buying lifted Outbacks for driving "fun."
Quoth Adam Ant:
It's so sad

You're having fun...
EDIT to say I feel lame for bagging on lifted Outbacks. Uncool, even if I plead frustration with the tendency to just pile onto whatever's being pushed. I mean, I'm fundamentally asking for that to go back to happening with sports cars, so that's a bit hypocritical...
Also, I confess I think this looks cool, even if I kinda hate myself over it:
